But Americans were not prepared. Not by a long shot

Very few had the foresight to predict that the economic system and social fabric of our nation would be threatened with upheaval and disarray. This week the National Geographic series Doomsday Preppers debuted to anaudience of four million, a testament to the fact that preparing for disasters – regardless of the kind – is a growing trend, and one that’s popular even among those that have been affectionately dubbed the sheeple. No doubt some of those watching the show, who never considered the possibility of far-from equilibrium events, will take to preparing right away.

What would happen if the Federal Reserve was shut down permanently? That is a question that CNBC asked recently, but unfortunately most Americans don’t really think about the Fed much. Most Americans are content with believing that the Federal Reserve is just another stuffy government agency that sets our interest rates and that is watching out for the best interests of the American people.

But that is not the case at all. The truth is that the Federal Reserve is a private banking cartel that has been designed to systematically destroy the value of our currency, drain the wealth of the American public and enslave the federal government to perpetually expanding debt. During this election year, the economy is the number one issue that voters are concerned about. But instead of endlessly blaming both political parties, the truth is that most of the blame should be placed at the feet of the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve has more power over the performance of the U.S. economy than anyone else does. The Federal Reserve controls the money supply, the Federal Reserve sets the interest rates and the Federal Reserve hands out bailouts to the big banks that absolutely dwarf anything that Congress ever did. If the American people are ever going to learn what is really going on with our economy, then it is absolutely imperative that they get educated about the Federal Reserve.
The following are 10 things that every American should know about the Federal Reserve….
#1 The Federal Reserve System Is A Privately Owned Banking Cartel
The Federal Reserve is not a government agency.
The truth is that it is a privately owned central bank. It is owned by the banks that are members of the Federal Reserve system. We do not know how much of the system each bank owns, because that has never been disclosed to the American people.
The Federal Reserve openly admits that it is privately owned. When it was defending itself against a Bloomberg request for information under the Freedom of Information Act, the Federal Reserve stated unequivocally in court that it was“not an agency” of the federal government and therefore not subject to the Freedom of Information Act.
In fact, if you want to find out that the Federal Reserve system is owned by the member banks, all you have to do is go to the Federal Reserve website….

The twelve regional Federal Reserve Banks, which were established by Congress as the operating arms of the nation’s central banking system, are organized much like private corporations–possibly leading to some confusion about “ownership.” For example, the Reserve Banks issue shares of stock to member banks. However, owning Reserve Bank stock is quite different from owning stock in a private company. The Reserve Banks are not operated for profit, and ownership of a certain amount of stock is, by law, a condition of membership in the System. The stock may not be sold, traded, or pledged as security for a loan; dividends are, by law, 6 percent per year.

Foreign governments and foreign banks do own significant ownership interests in the member banks that own the Federal Reserve system. So it would be accurate to say that the Federal Reserve is partially foreign-owned.
But until the exact ownership shares of the Federal Reserve are revealed, we will never know to what extent the Fed is foreign-owned.
#2 The Federal Reserve System Is A Perpetual Debt Machine
As long as the Federal Reserve System exists, U.S. government debt will continue to go up and up and up.
This runs contrary to the conventional wisdom that Democrats and Republicans would have us believe, but unfortunately it is true.
The way our system works, whenever more money is created more debt is created as well.
For example, whenever the U.S. government wants to spend more money than it takes in (which happens constantly), it has to go ask the Federal Reserve for it. The federal government gives U.S. Treasury bonds to the Federal Reserve, and the Federal Reserve gives the U.S. government “Federal Reserve Notes” in return. Usually this is just done electronically.
So where does the Federal Reserve get the Federal Reserve Notes?
It just creates them out of thin air.
Wouldn’t you like to be able to create money out of thin air?
Instead of issuing money directly, the U.S. government lets the Federal Reserve create it out of thin air and then the U.S. government borrows it.
Talk about stupid.
When this new debt is created, the amount of interest that the U.S. government will eventually pay on that debt is not also created.
So where will that money come from?
Well, eventually the U.S. government will have to go back to the Federal Reserve to get even more money to finance the ever expanding debt that it has gotten itself trapped into.
It is a debt spiral that is designed to go on perpetually.
You see, the reality is that the money supply is designed to constantly expand under the Federal Reserve system. That is why we have all become accustomed to thinking of inflation as “normal”.
So what does the Federal Reserve do with the U.S. Treasury bonds that it gets from the U.S. government?
Well, it sells them off to others. There are lots of people out there that have made a ton of money by holding U.S. government debt.
In fiscal 2011, the U.S. government paid out 454 billion dollars just in interest on the national debt.
That is 454 billion dollars that was taken out of our pockets and put into the pockets of wealthy individuals and foreign governments around the globe.
The truth is that our current debt-based monetary system was designed by greedy bankers that wanted to make enormous profits by using the Federal Reserve as a tool to create money out of thin air and lend it to the U.S. government at interest.
And that plan is working quite well.
Most Americans today don’t understand how any of this works, but many prominent Americans in the past did understand it.
For example, Thomas Edison was once quoted in the New York Times as saying the following….

That is to say, under the old way any time we wish to add to the national wealth we are compelled to add to the national debt.
Now, that is what Henry Ford wants to prevent. He thinks it is stupid, and so do I, that for the loan of $30,000,000 of their own money the people of the United States should be compelled to pay $66,000,000 — that is what it amounts to, with interest. People who will not turn a shovelful of dirt nor contribute a pound of material will collect more money from the United States than will the people who supply the material and do the work. That is the terrible thing about interest. In all our great bond issues the interest is always greater than the principal. All of the great public works cost more than twice the actual cost, on that account. Under the present system of doing business we simply add 120 to 150 per cent, to the stated cost.
But here is the point: If our nation can issue a dollar bond, it can issue a dollar bill. The element that makes the bond good makes the bill good.

We should have listened to men like Edison and Ford.
But we didn’t.
And so we pay the price.
On July 1, 1914 (a few months after the Fed was created) the U.S. national debt was 2.9 billion dollars.
Today, it is more than more than 5000 times larger.
Yes, the perpetual debt machine is working quite well, and most Americans do not even realize what is happening.
#3 The Federal Reserve Has Destroyed More Than 96% Of The Value Of The U.S. Dollar
Did you know that the U.S. dollar has lost 96.2 percent of its value since 1900? Of course almost all of that decline has happened since the Federal Reserve was created in 1913.
Because the money supply is designed to expand constantly, it is guaranteed that all of our dollars will constantly lose value.
Inflation is a “hidden tax” that continually robs us all of our wealth. The Federal Reserve always says that it is “committed” to controlling inflation, but that never seems to work out so well.
And current Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says that it is actually a good thing to have a little bit of inflation. He plans to try to keep the inflation rate at about 2 percent in the coming years.
So what is so bad about 2 percent? That doesn’t sound so bad, does it?
Well, just consider the following excerpt from a recent Forbes article….

The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) has made it official: After its latest two day meeting, it announced its goal to devalue the dollar by 33% over the next 20 years. The debauch of the dollar will be even greater if the Fed exceeds its goal of a 2 percent per year increase in the price level.

#4 The Federal Reserve Can Bail Out Whoever It Wants To With No Accountability
The American people got so upset about the bailouts that Congress gave to the Wall Street banks and to the big automakers, but did you know that the biggest bailouts of all were given out by the Federal Reserve?
Thanks to a very limited audit of the Federal Reserve that Congress approved a while back, we learned that the Fed made trillions of dollars in secret bailout loans to the big Wall Street banks during the last financial crisis. They even secretly loaned out hundreds of billions of dollars to foreign banks.
According to the results of the limited Fed audit mentioned above, a total of$16.1 trillion in secret loans were made by the Federal Reserve between December 1, 2007 and July 21, 2010.
The following is a list of loan recipients that was taken directly from page 131of the audit report….
Citigroup - $2.513 trillion
Morgan Stanley - $2.041 trillion
Merrill Lynch - $1.949 trillion
Bank of America - $1.344 trillion
Barclays PLC - $868 billion
Bear Sterns - $853 billion
Goldman Sachs - $814 billion
Royal Bank of Scotland - $541 billion
JP Morgan Chase - $391 billion
Deutsche Bank - $354 billion
UBS - $287 billion
Credit Suisse - $262 billion
Lehman Brothers - $183 billion
Bank of Scotland - $181 billion
BNP Paribas - $175 billion
Wells Fargo - $159 billion
Dexia - $159 billion
Wachovia - $142 billion
Dresdner Bank - $135 billion
Societe Generale - $124 billion
“All Other Borrowers” - $2.639 trillion
So why haven’t we heard more about this?
This is scandalous.
In addition, it turns out that the Fed paid enormous sums of money to the big Wall Street banks to help “administer” these nearly interest-free loans….

Not only did the Federal Reserve give 16.1 trillion dollars in nearly interest-free loans to the “too big to fail” banks, the Fed also paid them over 600 million dollars to help run the emergency lending program. According to the GAO, the Federal Reserve shelled out an astounding $659.4 million in “fees” to the very financial institutions which caused the financial crisis in the first place.

Does reading that make you angry?
It should.
#5 The Federal Reserve Is Paying Banks Not To Lend Money
Did you know that the Federal Reserve is actually paying banks not to make loans?
It is true.
Section 128 of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 allows the Federal Reserve to pay interest on “excess reserves” that U.S. banks park at the Fed.
So the banks can just send their cash to the Fed and watch the money come rolling in risk-free.
So are many banks taking advantage of this?
You tell me. Just check out the chart below. The amount of “excess reserves” parked at the Fed has gone from nearly nothing to about 1.5 trillion dollarssince 2008….

But shouldn’t the banks be lending the money to us so that we can start businesses and buy homes?
You would think that is how it is supposed to work.
Unfortunately, the Federal Reserve is not working for us.
The Federal Reserve is working for the big banks.
Sadly, most Americans have no idea what is going on.
Another example of this is the government debt carry trade.
Here is how it works. The Federal Reserve lends gigantic piles of nearly interest-free cash to the big Wall Street banks, and in turn those banks use the money to buy up huge amounts of government debt. Since the return on government debt is higher, the banks are able to make large profits very easily and with very little risk.
This scam was also explained in a recent article in the Guardian….

Consider this: we pretend that banks are private businesses that should be allowed to run their own affairs. But they are the biggest scroungers of public money of our time. Banks are lent vast sums of money by central banks at near-zero interest. They lend that money to us or back to the government at higher rates and rake in the difference by the billion. They don’t even have to make clever investments to make huge profits.

That is a pretty good little scam they have got going, wouldn’t you say?
#6 The Federal Reserve Creates Artificial Economic Bubbles That Are Extremely Damaging
By allowing a centralized authority such as the Federal Reserve to dictate interest rates, it creates an environment where financial bubbles can be created very easily.
Over the past several decades, we have seen bubble after bubble. Most of these have been the result of the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates artificially low. If the free market had been setting interest rates all this time, things would have never gotten so far out of hand.
For example, the housing crash would have never been so horrific if the Federal Reserve had not created such ideal conditions for a housing bubble in the first place. But we allow the Fed to continue to make the same mistakes.
Right now, the Federal Reserve continues to set interest rates much, much lower than they should be. This is causing a tremendous misallocation of economic resources, and there will be massive consequences for that down the line.
#7 The Federal Reserve System Is Dominated By The Big Wall Street Banks
Even since it was created, the Federal Reserve system has been dominated by the big Wall Street banks.
The following is from a previous article that I did about the Fed….

The New York representative is the only permanent member of the Federal Open Market Committee, while other regional banks rotate in 2 and 3 year intervals. The former head of the New York Fed, Timothy Geithner, is now U.S. Treasury Secretary. The truth is that the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has always been the most important of the regional Fed banks by far, and in turn the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has always been dominated by Wall Street and the major New York banks.

#8 It Is Not An Accident That We Saw The Personal Income Tax And The Federal Reserve System Both Come Into Existence In 1913
On February 3rd, 1913 the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. Later that year, the United States Revenue Act of 1913 imposed a personal income tax on the American people and we have had one ever since.
Without a personal income tax, it is hard to have a central bank. It takes a lot of money to finance all of the government debt that a central banking system creates.
It is no accident that the 16th Amendment was ratified in 1913 and the Federal Reserve system was also created in 1913.
They have a symbiotic relationship and they are designed to work together.
We could fill Congress with people that are committed to ending this oppressive system, but so far we have chosen not to do that.
So our children and our grandchildren will face a lifetime of debt slavery because of us.
I am sure they will be thankful for that.
#9 The Current Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, Has A Nightmarish Track Record Of Incompetence
The mainstream media portrays Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke as a brilliant economist, but is that really the case?
Let’s go to the videotape.

In 2005, Bernanke said that we shouldn’t worry because housing prices had never declined on a nationwide basis before and he said that he believed that the U.S. would continue to experience close to “full employment”….

“We’ve never had a decline in house prices on a nationwide basis. So, what I think what is more likely is that house prices will slow, maybe stabilize, might slow consumption spending a bit. I don’t think it’s gonna drive the economy too far from its full employment path, though.”

In 2005, Bernanke also said that he believed that derivatives were perfectly safe and posed no danger to financial markets….

“With respect to their safety, derivatives, for the most part, are traded among very sophisticated financial institutions and individuals who have considerable incentive to understand them and to use them properly.”

In 2006, Bernanke said that housing prices would probably keep rising….

“Housing markets are cooling a bit. Our expectation is that the decline in activity or the slowing in activity will be moderate, that house prices will probably continue to rise.”

In 2007, Bernanke insisted that there was not a problem with subprime mortgages….

“At this juncture, however, the impact on the broader economy and financial markets of the problems in the subprime market seems likely to be contained. In particular, mortgages to prime borrowers and fixed-rate mortgages to all classes of borrowers continue to perform well, with low rates of delinquency.”

In 2008, Bernanke said that a recession was not coming….

“The Federal Reserve is not currently forecasting a recession.”

A few months before Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac collapsed, Bernanke insisted that they were totally secure….

“The GSEs are adequately capitalized. They are in no danger of failing.”

#10 The Federal Reserve Has Become Way Too Powerful
The Federal Reserve is the most undemocratic institution in America.
The Federal Reserve has become so powerful that it is now known as “the fourth branch of government”, but there are less checks and balances on the Fed than there are on the other three branches.
The Federal Reserve runs the U.S. economy but it is not accountable to the American people. We can’t vote those that run the Fed out of office if we do not like what they do.
Yes, the president appoints those that run the Fed, but he also knows that if he does not tread lightly he won’t get the money from the big Wall Street banks that he needs for his next election.
Thankfully, there are a few members of Congress that are complaining about how much power the Fed has. For example, Ron Paul once told MSNBC that he believes that the Federal Reserve is now actually more powerful than Congress…..

“The regulations should be on the Federal Reserve. We should have transparency of the Federal Reserve. They can create trillions of dollars to bail out their friends, and we don’t even have any transparency of this. They’re more powerful than the Congress.”

As members of Congress such as Ron Paul have started to shed some light on the activities of the Federal Reserve, that has caused many in the mainstream media to come to the defense of the Fed.
For example, a recent CNBC article entitled “If The Federal Reserve Is Abolished, What Then?” makes it sound like there is absolutely no other rational alternative to having the Federal Reserve run our economy.
But this is not what our founders intended.
The founders did not intend for a private banking cartel to issue our money and set our interest rates for us.
According to Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Congress has been given the responsibility to “coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures”.
So why is the Federal Reserve doing it?
But the CNBC article mentioned above makes it sound like the sky would fall if control of the currency was handed back over to the American people.
At one point, the article asks the following question….

“How would the U.S. economy then function? Something has to take its place, right?”

No, the truth is that we don’t need anyone to “manage” our economy.
The U.S. Treasury could be in charge of issuing our currency and the free market could set our interest rates.
We don’t need to have a centrally-planned economy.
We aren’t China.
And it goes against everything that our founders believed to be running up so much government debt.
For example, Thomas Jefferson once declared that if he could add just one more amendment to the U.S. Constitution it would be a ban on all government borrowing….

I wish it were possible to obtain a single amendment to our Constitution. I would be willing to depend on that alone for the reduction of the administration of our government to the genuine principles of its Constitution; I mean an additional article, taking from the federal government the power of borrowing.

Oh, how things would have been different if we had only listened to Thomas Jefferson.

They have failed categorically to provide convincing evidence regarding the alleged “Iranian-Saudi assassination plot,” more over, the evidence suggests it is instead, the latest in a long string of contrived federal entrapment cases. Guarded sites are Israeli government facilities like embassies while soft sites are Jewish synagogues, schools, and community centers.
Yoram Cohen, the head of Israel’s security service Shin Bet, said recently that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard will attack Israeli and Jewish targets abroad in response to the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists.

The intensifying rhetoric of war from Washington and Tel Aviv is based on pure paranoia and propaganda and driven by a desire to wipe Iran off of the Middle Eastern map. All the talk from Israel about the Iranian threat to its existence and security is a clever attempt to hide the reality that it is actually Israel and the United States that are waging war against Iran.

    Treating for Cold Exposure and Frostbite


     The following material may assist you in treating a victim for
exposure to the cold and also how to deal with frostbite. This
information is derived from "Advanced First Aid & Emergency Care,"
2nd edition, by the American Red Cross. To obtain a copy of this
book and to take instruction in first aid, please contact the local
office of the American Red Cross. They are listed in the white
pages of your telephone book.

     The extent of injury caused by exposure to abnormally low
temperature generally depends on such factors as wind velocity,
type and duration of exposure, temperature and humidity.

     Freezing is accelerated by wind, humidity or a combination of
the two. Injury caused by cold, dry air will be less than that
caused by cold, moist air or exposure to cold air while wearing wet
clothing. Fatigue, smoking, drinking of alcoholic beverages,
emotional stress and the presence of wounds or fractures intensity
the harmful effects of cold.

                        SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

     The general manifestations of prolonged exposure to extreme
cold include shivering, numbness, low body temperature, drowsiness
and marked muscular weakness. As time passes there is mental
confusion and impairment of judgment. The victim staggers, his
eyesight fails, he falls and he may become unconscious. Shock is
evident and the victim's heart may develop fibrillation. Death, if
it occurs, is usually due to heart failure.

     Frostbite results when crystals form, either superficially or
deeply in the fluids and the underlying soft tissues of the skin.
The effects are more severe if the injured area is thawed and then
refrozen. Frostbite is the most common injury caused by exposure to
the cold elements. Usually, the frozen area is small. the nose,
cheeks, ears, fingers and toes are the most commonly affected.

     Just before frostbite occurs, the affected skin may be slight-
ly flushed. The skin changes to white or grayish yellow as the
frostbite develops. Pain is sometimes felt early but subsides
later. Often there is NO pain; the part being frostbitten simply
feels intensely cold and numb. The victim commonly is not aware of
frostbite until someone tells him or until he observes his pale,
glossy skin. The extent of local injury cannot be determined
accurately on initial examination, even after rewarming. The extent
of tissue damage usually corresponds to that in burns. In superfi-
cial frostbite, there will be an area that looks white or grayish
and the surface skin will feel hard but the underlying tissue will
be soft. With deeper involvement, large blisters appear on the
surface, as well as in underlying tissue, and the affected area is
hard, cold and insensitive. Destruction of the entire thickness of
the skin will necessitate skin grafting and will constitute a
medical emergency, because gangrene may result from loss of blood
supply to the injured part.

                             FIRST AID

     The objectives of first aid are to protect the frozen area
from further injury, to warm the affected part rapidly and to
maintain respiration. Formerly, it was recommended that victims of
frostbite be treated by slow warming -- rubbing with snow and
gradually increasing the temperature. But recent studies have shown
conclusively that much better results are obtained if the affected
part is WARMED RAPIDLY in running or circulating water, unless the
part has been thawed and refrozen, in which case it should be
warmed at room temperature (from 70 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit). Do
NOT use excessive heat, as from a stove, hot water bottles, elec-
tric blankets or other devices.

                             FROSTBITE

1.   Cover the frozen part.

2.   Provide extra clothing and blankets.

3.   Bring the victim indoors as soon as possible.

4.   Give him a warm drink (not alcoholic!).

5.   Rewarm the frozen part QUICKLY by immersing it in water that
     is warm but not hot. Test the water by pouring some over the
     inner surface of your forearm or place a thermometer in the
     water and carefully add warm water to keep the temperature
     between 102 degrees and 105 degrees Fahrenheit. If warm water
     is not available or practical to use, wrap the affected part
     in a sheet and warm blankets.

6.   Handle the area of the frostbite GENTLY and DO NOT MASSAGE IT.
     Severe swelling will develop rapidly after thawing. Discon-
     tinue warming as soon as the part becomes flushed (turning
     red). Once the part is rewarmed, have the victim exercise it.

7.   Cleanse the affected area with water and either soap or a mild
     detergent (NOT laundry or dishwasher detergent, though; they
     can be caustic and cause a chemical burn). Rinse it thorough-
     ly. Carefully blot dry with sterile or clean towels. Do NOT
     break the blisters.

8.   If the victim's fingers or toes are involved, place dry,
     sterile gauze between them to keep them separated.

9.   Do NOT apply other dressings unless the victim is to be
     transported to medical aid.

10. Elevate frostbitten parts and protect them from contact with
     bedclothes.

11. Do NOT allow the victim to walk after the affected part thaws,
     if his feet are involved.

12. Do not apply additional heat and do not allow the victim to
     sit near a radiator, stove or fire. The numbed part may be
     severely burned and the victim might never realize it is
     happening to him.

13. If a person with frozen feet is alone and MUST walk to get
     medical assistance, he should NOT attempt thawing in advance.

14. If travel after receiving first aid is necessary, cover the
     affected parts with a sterile or clean cloth.

15. Obtain medical assistance as soon as possible. If the distance
     to be covered is great, apply temporary dressings to the hands
     if they have been affected by frostbite.

16. Keep injured parts elevated during transportation.

17. If medical help or trained ambulance personnel will not reach
     the scene for an hour or more AND if the victim is CONSCIOUS
     and NOT VOMITING, give him a weak solution of salt and baking
     soda at home or while enroute (1 level teaspoon of salt and
     1/2 level teaspoon of baking soda in each quart of water,
     neither hot nor cold). Do not give alcoholic beverages. Allow
     the victim to sip S-L-O-W-L-Y. Give an adult about 4 ounces (a
     half glass) over a period of 15 minutes; give a child from 1
     to 12 years old about 2 ounces; give an infant (under 1 year
     old) about 1 ounce every 15 minutes. Discontinue giving fluids
     if vomiting occurs. Fluid may be given by mouth ONLY if
     medical help will not be available for an hour or more and is
     not otherwise contraindicated.

                        PROLONGED EXPOSURE

1.   Give the victim artificial respiration, if necessary.

2.   Bring the victim into a warm room as quickly as possible.

3.   Remove wet or frozen clothing and anything that constricts the
     victim's arms, legs or fingers and might interfere with
     circulation as the frozen part is thawed and swelling begins.

4.   Rewarm the victim rapidly by wrapping him in a warm blanket or
     by placing him in a tub of water that is warmed to 102 to 105
     degrees Fahrenheit. If a thermometer is not available, make
     sure the water is not hot to YOUR hand and forearm.

5.   If the victim is conscious, give him hot liquids (but not
     alcohol) by mouth.

6.   Dry the victim thoroughly if water was used to rewarm him.

7.   Carry out the appropriate procedures as described under frost-
     bite.

10 Winter Driving Tips.

                          10 Winter driving tips.
1. The safest tires are studded mud and snow (M/S) tires on all four
    wheels. Some states do not permit studded tires, so check with your
    local dealer.
2. Carry emergency clothing in the car. A stocking cap, snow boots,
    mittens, a pair of coveralls, and a blaze orange vest so you will be
    seen if you have to walk.
3. If you get stuck, kitty litter is a good way to get traction under your
    wheels. Carry the litter in a couple of gallon plastic milk jugs.
    Sand and dirt are ok too, but they freeze solid if any moisture
    collects on them. Some people carry metal treads, but you have to stop
    and go back for them. Some carry a few evergreen branches.
4. When driving on ice, always try to drive with 2 tires on the right
    shoulder of the road. It is usually gravel, and provides better
    traction than the smooth streets or highways. This won't work if there
    is snow.
5. Plan your route to avoid stop signs and lights on the top of a hill.
    People spin their wheels to get started and this creates a bed of ice.
6. To get home safely, you have to be able to see. Every November 1st,
    buy and install a new set of wiper blades. This is cheap insurance.
7. Sometimes you will want a cold windshield, and sometimes you will want
    a warm windshield. If it's raining and ice is forming on the car, you
    want a warm windshield to melt the ice and let the wipers work. If
    it's cold and snowing, you want the windshield cold so the snow won't
    stick, and will just blow off with the wind and wipers..
8. If you get stopped on and uphill slope, try this to get started again.
    Manual transmissions, take off in second gear. Try to get rolling as
    slowly as possible, if you can, get started without even using the gas
    pedal. Automatics, it's even easier. Never, ever, spin your wheels,
    just take off as slowly as possible. Spinning heats up the tires and
    just handicaps you further. If you can get rolling those first few
    inches, you can keep rolling.
9. If it's snowing or blowing, put on your lights. If there's a blizzard,
    put on your flashers.
10. Chains are best. They give more traction than anything else. Put a
    set of chains on the two driving tires, or better yet, keep a spare
    pair of tires in the trunk with chains on them. It's lots easier to
    change 2 tires than it is to install chains in the snow and muck.
    Plus, the chains on the spares are fiddle string tight, so they won't
    hammer the bottom of your car.

Though not mentioned in the ASG article, there is another tool that I would
not be without during winter driving, or summer for that matter. It is
commonly referred to as a Come-along winch. These are hand operated devices
that can lift a ton about 8 to 12 feet. And yes most cars weigh
considerabley more than a ton, but most of the time, you're not lifting them
straight up either. They are available in hardware stores for $30 to $40.
With one of these winches and some chain, or aircraft cable, you can winch
yourself out of just about any situation. It's not as pretty, or as fast as
the pretty winches on the big jeeps, but you can bet it's several hundred
dollars less expensive too.

But do you have plans for this weekend and if so does it have anything to do with the game? It kills me that so many will go all out for one game and spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars for one game and a Sunday evening just so they can party. But if you ask the same party person if he prep's or is prepping he looks at you like you are a fool, yep I'm the fool for spending my money on food for storage and survival and you are the smart one for spending hundreds of dollars on a super bowl party. Why am I crazy for prepping? I was told by someone that I was crazy for using my money to prep and not doing fun stuff like going on vacation or getting a new car or truck. What??? I had to shake my head and then I looked at them for a long few seconds and I just had to ask them this question, "why am I crazy to spend my money the way I want to, but if you spend your money the way you want it's ok?" Then I asked if they had insurance on there car, home, life and health, and the answer was yes to all. So my next question I asked was why not have the same insurance for your survival and the survival of your family? I still don't get why some people think it is crazy to stock up on needed supplies and have the means to survive a collapse. I prep to survive and I plan to survive the collapse and as long as I can prep I will prep till that day of doom hits and if it never hits then so be it, all I did was put some hard work into something I thought would save me and my family and now I will have prepping items to pass on to my kids as a gift of love and of life. If you prep and have people telling you that you are crazy, it's not you who are the crazy ones because you have the foresight to see down the road and know that hard times are coming and lay up needed supplies for hard times. Keep prepping and keep learning skills because the collapse is coming, and I think is coming soon! Time is short and we all have lots of work to do!

THE FED: DISHONEST, IMMORAL, UNCONSTITUTIONAL

There is no greater threat to the security and prosperity of the United States today than the out-of-control, secretive Federal Reserve.
Imagine that parents, overwhelmed by debt and months behind on their bills, sent their spendthrift teenagers out each weekend for a night on the town with credit cards and blank checks. Would anyone be surprised if this family never got their finances under control?
Yet that is how a government which is almost 15 trillion dollars in the red behaves by entrusting taxpayers’ financial futures to the Federal Reserve, which pumps money into the economy whenever it chooses and makes secret deals with Wall Street executives, foreign central banks, and other politically-connected insiders without any significant oversight from Congress.
Snuck through Congress on Christmas Eve in 1913, the Federal Reserve Act established the Fed as America’s central bank. The Fed essentially creates money out of thin air, manipulates interest rates, and interferes with the free market. By doing so, the Fed fuels our economy’s boom-bust cycle and has helped devalue our dollar by over 95%.
According to the Minneapolis Federal Reserve branch’s own website, what you could buy with $1.00 in 1913 would now cost you $22.55.
Although Congress and the Treasury helped bring about the housing bubble and financial collapse with legislation, regulations, and keeping the funds flowing to reckless institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the Fed was the main cause of the crisis. Its interference in setting interest rates distorted the market, and its status as the “lender of last resort” ensured banks could hook individuals and businesses for loans on projects that weren’t in as high demand as forecasters believed.
When the crash occurred, common sense dictated a change in policy. But the Federal Reserve only increased its lending and intervention to historic highs.
While selling Americans a bill of goods that the economy would never recover without unprecedented bailouts, we now know that at the peak of its “emergency lending,” the Fed was providing nearly 90% of its discount window loans to foreign banks! This included making over 70 loans to a bank partially owned by the Bank of Libya.
The Fed was able to get away with these actions because Congress lacks the authority to thoroughly and completely audit it. In fact, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke appeared before Congress early in the crisis and was able to refuse a direct request to disclose which institutions were receiving trillions of taxpayer dollars from the Fed.

It's like the news as one group of stories that it plays over and over. The GOP and the next state that a fake vote is in and how no matter how Ron Paul does it's not a win or a 2nd place or 3rd place he is just there and the people who vote for him are nuts and crazy right wing fools.
But I was always told to vote because every vote counts and every ones has a right to their own views and likes, but not if you vote for or like Ron Paul. Your vote doesn't count and your a fool. Why? Why would people get on TV and say something like this? I will tell you why, because a man like Ron Paul scares the hell out of the leaders in government and the New World Order. He stands for something and if you like whats he has to say or not you have to give it to him for getting out and doing what he is doing and what he is saying. Because it's not in line with the fools in office now and so outside the box of the White House thinking. But he gets out there and tells the people what he thinks and how he feels about the issues weather you like his views or not you have to thank him for being a true American and a Patriot for this country.
I don't like many in office and damn sure don't trust any of them, but Ron Paul looks like he may be one good apple out of a large group of bad apples. I may be wrong but I hope not, if not for my for this country. Because if any of the other fools running get in office we are doomed!!!

How do you safeguard the things most vital to your survival while preparing for not only the breakdown of civil society but the possible imposition of extreme countermeasures by government?

One way is through having buried survival caches placed in strategic locations. They are cheap and easy to make from PVC pipe at the local building supply store, or if you are too lazy to make your own they can be purchased from many places on line along with many other storage supplies that you will need.
These PVC survival caches should be water tight if constructed correctly, but every precaution should be taken to protect the items that are put within the cache. There is nothing worse than being in an emergency situation and finding out that your survival cache has been ruined by water seepage. So make sure that you put everything that you can in preferably air tight vacuum bags. Also don’t forget to use O2 Absorbers in your cache they are cheap protection from moisture!

So what should I put in my cache?
Buried survival caches can prevent theft or confiscation of stored things like emergency food, shelter, medical supplies, clothing items, assorted valuables, and trade items such as personal hygiene, liquor and tobacco products. Pretty much anything that u think you might need if the SHTF!
Also you could use your survival cache for storing extra weapons and ammo.

I was looking for a light weight, small SW Radio with a nice antenna that I could use my Slinky Antenna on. And I have found it! This is a nice little radio and works real good as-is but when I hook my slinky antenna up to it you get so much more from it. I have it fixed to my bug-out-bag with the belt clip and it is right next to my Midland NOAA weather radio and with the two of them I think we can keep up with most of the info. I do also carry a scanner with me for the police, fire and other info.
If you can find one of these little radios I would say get it because it is a nice, small radio that does a lot for a small package.

OK It's A New Year...... Here We Go!!!!

So a new year and a new start for us to get into gear. I have 20 or more things I have to get done before the summer. I want to be even more ready for the coming collapse with more tools, skills and gear to survive the event of doom. I would like to do this before summer and if I stick to my plan I can get it done, here is my list of things I want to and need to do.

Project List for 1st Six Months of 2012
#1 Get more water
#2 Get 2-4 more 15 gallon water barrels
#3 Build or Buy a solar oven
#4 Get a 2nd Grain Mill ( Because one is none and two is one)
#5 Get a 2nd water filter
#6 Get more water filters for the water filter
#7 Add to my Sanitation stuff, more bags, Enzyme packets, bath wipes, hand wipes, ect......
#8 Add to N 95 mask stock (I would like 100-200 more)
#9 Get a Wonder Clean Washer and Mobile Washer for clean clothes on the go
#10 Add to my LP gas, I need more 1lb and 20 lb(at least 25 more 1 lb and 2-4 20 lb)
#11 Add a 3rd grill, I have a Coleman camp stove and a BBQ but I would like a Volcano II with (LP)
#12 I would like to make 2 five gallon buckets with strike anyplace matches with some Bic's mixed in
#13 I need to add a 2nd heater, a small one that runs on LP gas( I have a heater buddy but want a 2nd)
#14 I need to build a solar panel set up 150 to 250 watts ( this may be an end of the year project)
#15 I need to check and update BOB and car kits, adding new items and removing out of date stuff
#16 Start back with my weekly trip to Goodwill and other 2nd hand stores looking for needed stuff
#17 Add more 5 gallon buckets of food, I need more Grains, beans, Rice and salt
#18 Add more #10 cans of Mountain House foods, Meats, and more Soups and dinners
#19 Work on getting more hand tools, I have to many power tools and in grid down they are no good
#20 Hardware, like nails, wire, bolts, nuts and screws/ stuff to fix and repair needed gear
#21 Take a welding class, I never have been shown the right way so I will learn it!
#22 Spend more time at the shooting range, I will set up a date to shoot every week or two weeks
#23 Buy more Ammo, I plan to buy a box or two every week
#24 Buy a new gun or two
#25 Add to my gun cleaning stuff and buy some more parts for each gun

Ok this is my project list I'm sure I will add to and even drop a few things I always do...

2012 What Is Ahead?

What is down the road for us in 2012? What will become of the world in this new year? Is this the year of the collapse, or will they prop up the dollar for one more year? Will the job market get any better or will the unemployment levels get worse? What's Next for us?
I don't have a crystal ball and I can not tell the future from looking at your hand, but I can see the way this country is going down the drain and I know that it will not be that much longer till the collapse hits. All I have heard on the dumb dumb box was how this Christmas shopping is going to be up 5%-15% this year but if that was true which it is not, stop to think back to last year when the sales were down in some places as much as 20% so if we were going to be up 5-15% this year but was down so much last year how can the percentage up this year be good if it would still be below the last years level? It is just like all the number out of the White House they just don't add up, or they do add up but not right! I'm sure that shopping was down this year in a lot of places and when I was out and about this Christmas I asked every sales person that would give me the time of day and every place was the same, "we are slow and we have half the staff this year but it's OK because we have way less shoppers this year". We did 50-75% less shopping this year and only used cash and lots of people I know did the same. So if so many are cutting back and doing less how were we going to spend more this year? It was what the government wanted, because if we do as the White House we all know to get out of debt all we have to do is spend our way out of it! Yes that's right don't cut back, don't save your money as soon as you get it spend it and all will be OK later............ What a load of Shit!!
Sorry to say it looks like this year is not going to be any better than the last and I will bet it's worse that last year. The dollar will have big trouble this year and I'm sure we will inch ever closer to the full blown Police State with the great Obama and his new legislation passed under NDAA 2012,

In hundreds of separate sections totaling over 500 pages, the Act also contains critical Administration initiatives to control the spiraling health care costs of the Department of Defense (DoD), to develop counterterrorism initiatives abroad, to build the security capacity of key partners, to modernize the force, and to boost the efficiency and effectiveness of military operations worldwide.
The fact that I support this bill as a whole does not mean I agree with everything in it. In particular, I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation, and prosecution of suspected terrorists. Over the last several years, my Administration has developed an effective, sustainable framework for the detention, interrogation and trial of suspected terrorists that allows us to maximize both our ability to collect intelligence and to incapacitate dangerous individuals in rapidly developing situations, and the results we have achieved are undeniable. Our success against al-Qa’ida and its affiliates and adherents has derived in significant measure from providing our counterterrorism professionals with the clarity and flexibility they need to adapt to changing circumstances and to utilize whichever authorities best protect the American people, and our accomplishments have respected the values that make our country an example for the world.

So sit down with a cup of coffee, a paper and a pen, and reflect: What kinds of New Years Resolutions will you make for yourself this January 1st? Will it include preps? Will it include skills to use to survive the coming collapse?

#1 Be realistic by setting achievable goals. Winning the lottery, for example, is out of your grasp so stick with down to earth ideas.

#2 Describe your resolutions in specific terms. Instead of "I don't want to be lazy," opt for "I want to exercise regularly" or "I will cut down on my television watching."

#3 Break down large goals into smaller ones. For instance, commit to losing weight by resolving to join a gym and improve your eating habits

#4 Find alternatives to a behavior that you want to change, and make this part of your resolution plan. So you want to quit smoking but you smoked to relax yourself? What other forms of relaxation are available to you?

#5 Above all, aim for things that are truly important to you, not what you think you ought to do or what others expect of you.

How Do We Use Our Time That Is Left?

I know that the collapse is coming and so do a lot of people, but how are we using our time that is left? What are we working on and what plans do or will we have for survival? I have been a survivalist for many years and feel that I have a very good base for my survival supplies, but talk to some people who know me and they say I am more than ready. I don't see it that way and the reason is because what if the collapse is ten times worse than I plan for, or what if it's just as bad as I planned for but I end up with a few more people in my group than I planned for. I don't think I will ever be 100% done with my prep's and will always be working on then some way or another. And as I plan my survival from time to time I update my plan and make a few changes and add new items to my list and from time to time I even remove a item from my list.
So how do we use our time that is left?

                      Planning For Survival

In light of recent events, such as the Persian Gulf War,  terror 
ism, and economic instability, many individuals and families  are 
taking a fresh look at the dreaded "S-word," survivalism.

  As with any beginners, these people need some sort of plan  for 
these  uncharted waters. I hope that this article can  give  some 
useful  guidance to those new to the field, and perhaps some  new 
insights  to  others who have been left to their own  devices  in 
coming to grips with this virtually all-inclusive field.

   This plan consists of nine major points: 1. Determination;  1. 
Becoming/staying  healthy;   3. Allocating your Budget;   4.  De 
veloping plans of action;  5. Have a "bug-out" kit;  6. Plan  for 
duration;  7. Get training;  8. Practice;  9. Don't advertise.

    The first requirement to insuring  your  (and your  family's)  
longevity  is  DETERMINATION. You must want to  survive.  Contact 
others upon whom you might rely  (and whom may likewise rely upon 
you)  in a crisis. This is not a game,  although games can play a 
part in the training aspect. If we are to survive as individuals,  
as  families,  as a society,  we cannot approach this as  a  one-
person  show. It will take cooperation of the highest order.  The 
stakes are literally life and death.

  Many people take the attitude that "If it happens,  I  wouldn't 
want  to live anyway, " This is an attitude which almost  guaran 
tees defeat or death. A husband,  father,  or single mother  with 
this  attitude  is virtually condemning his or her  family  to  a 
similar fate.

  BECOME/STAY  HEALTHY. Every-one in the family or  group  should 
get  a  complete medical,  dental and vision checkup.  Find  your 
weaknesses  and  limitations so you may cope with  them,   before 
they take you by surprise Get caught up on immunizations such  as 
tetanus,  hepatitis,  and measles. If eyeglasses or contacts  are 
needed,   get at least one spare pair,  or save old ones.   Stock 
up on cleaning solution if you wear contacts. Work to bring  your 
teeth  up to the healthiest level possible. A toothache can be  a 
major  problem even in normal times when a dentist is  available. 
Imagine trying to make critical decisions while suffering with  a 
toothache when there may be few,  if any,  dentists in operation.

  Make sure your feet are in good condition. They may someday  be 
your only mode of transportation. Begin and maintain an  exercise 
program  which balances strength with endurance and  flexibility. 
Running,  swimming,  and stair climbing are all excellent  condi 
tioners.

 ALLOCATE  PART OF YOUR BUDGET. Acquire supplies as  your  budget 
allows. Be practical;  set priorities. For example: set aside $10 
per  month for weaponry  (including ammunition and cleaning  sup 
plies,    ($10  per month for clothing  (if you  don't  have  the 
proper  clothing  already on hand. Three-piece  suits  or  tennis 
outfits have very limited survival applications) ,  another $10 a 
month for reserve food and medical supplies,  and so on. If money 
is tight, you can alternate purchases from month to month.

 The  important  thing  is to make some  sort  of  survival-based 
acquisition  regularly,  or at every opportunity. In making  sur 
vival investments,  you should consider the following points:  a)  
Might you actually need it  (Does it serve a legitimate  survival 
need,  such as food) ? b)  Do you have the skill to use it  prop 
erly,   and  would you be able to repair it  when  it  inevitably 
breaks down? c)  Will it need something else,  such as electrici 
ty,  gas,  heat,  or water to operate? d)  How many/much will you 
need,   and  how  long do you expect it to last   (see  Plan  For 
Duration)  : e)  Is it practical for the conditions  you  antici 
pate,  such as proper clothing for the climate?

  DEVELOP PLANS OF ACTION. You should discuss with your family or 
group  the  conditions under which you would  run   (Where?)   or 
stay;  whether to hide  (For how long?)  or fight  (Whom? How?) . 
Every  member  of the group must be in agreement with  the  final 
plan.  One  dissident  could destroy all  your  intentions;   for 
instance by "setting-out" the group to an adversary.

    You  should  also  develop "backup" plans  to  cover  various 
contingencies  such as those mentioned. Plan for  the  worst-case 
scenario and work down from there.

   HAVE  A  "BUG-OUT" KIT. Keep a short-term  (up  to  one  week)  
survival  kit  handy in case you must leave  NOW.   Remember  the 
priorities: shelter,  water,  food,  medical supplies,   weapons,  
communications. Ideally,  you should have several kits;  one  for 
each member of the family and group,  another one in each vehicle 
in case a crisis occurs at an unexpected moment  (as they usually 
do)  .  and a large cache of supplies away from the home,   in  a 
place  safe  from discovery or disaster;  in the event  you  must 
evacuate  your home quickly, as in the case of fire,   earthquake 
or war. Each of these kits or caches should be planned to supple 
ment and extend the capabilities of the next smallest kit.

  Avoid  making your personal bug-out kit too heavy to run  with;  
you may have to carry it long distances,  quickly.

 PLAN FOR DURATION. Try to realistically anticipate how long  you 
expect  your  scenario may last,  and add a little  more  to  the 
estimate as a buffer against shortsightedness.

   Do  you expect your disaster scenario to last for days   (such 
as  waiting for disaster relief after a major storm,   fire,   or 
earth  quake) ,  months  (i.e.,  a major strike by  unions;   re 
building after a disaster) ,  or years  (such as being caught  in 
the  clutches of a dictatorship,  foreign invasion,  or  persecu 
tion) ?

   Try  to be realistic in your preparations. Plan for  the  con 
sumption of food (calories per person per day,  plus other essen 
tial  nutrients)  ,   water  (gallons per person  per  day,   for 
drinking,  cooking and sanitation) ,  ammunition  (as much as can 
be obtained,  with a suggested minimum of 500 rounds per  weapon) 
,  air  quality   (while in shelter,  or  masks  for  outside)  ,  
medical  supplies  (including prescription medicines) ,   and  so 
on.

 Some  of  your  scenarios may look unlikely in  the  context  of 
present  conditions,  but it only takes an open-eyed look at  the 
world,   the nation,  or the neighborhood,  to see the  potential 
for  frightening  situations to rapidly develop which  would  not 
allow  time for preparation after the fact. For  instance,   note 
that many people reacting to a disaster often converge on all the 
nearest  stores for provisions such as food,   candles,   bottled 
water,  batteries,  and so on. Frequently,  the crowd gets  impa 
tient,  not wanting or waiting to be left without essentials  for 
themselves  or their families. Occasionally, rioting and  looting 
begin,  feeding upon itself as the unprepared start to panic.

  Your  aim must be to store adequate supplies for  all  intended 
members  of your group for the longest time that you will  likely 
be  on  your  own,  with self-sufficiency being  your  goal.  The 
federal government recommends having at least three to five  days 
supplies  on hand,  to sustain you until relief agencies can  get 
into  action.  The more serious the crisis,  the longer  you  may 
have to wait for outside help.

  If  you are able,  lay in extra supplies for a  few  additional 
persons who will, most likely,  show up either on their own,   or 
with members of the group ("My mother was visiting at the time; I 
couldn't  just  leave her") . As pragmatic as you must  be,   you 
must also not surrender your humanity completely. Otherwise,  you 
are no better than the predators you may be fleeing.  Of  course,  
there  is  a practical limit to how much you can be  expected  to 
cope with. Examine your own conscience on this issue.

 A  plan  must also be drawn up to deal  with  waste  management. 
Essential  "luxuries"  such as toilet paper,  soap,   and  proper 
means  of disposing of human waste and garbage with become  major 
issues  during a survival situation. Goods and services  we  have 
always taken for granted may no longer be available.

  You must also plan to cope with your people's emotional surviv 
al. The abrupt change in lifestyle,  the day to day fight to stay 
alive,  will take its toll psychologically if not treated quickly 
and  continuously.  Find things to alleviate  boredom,   such  as 
games  or  projects.  Give every able person in the group  a  job 
they will be responsible for. Even children can be instructed  to 
secure trash,  act as lookouts,  or help with food preparation or 
gathering  supplies.  Also attempt to continue with their  educa 
tion,   albeit with a different emphasis. Find duties  which  re 
quire  a person to study the situation and come up with  a  solu 
tion. Hold meetings to keep everyone current on what's happening,  
and conduct frequent and regular classes for everyone in survival 
arts. Keep your people,  and yourself,  busy. Despair may be your 
worst enemy.

 GET TRAINING. Your group should learn how to use weapons  effec 
tively.   Safety,   maintenance,   handling  malfunctions,    and 
marksmanship  are all of equal importance in a survival  context.  
Because this is an area where mistakes can be fatal,  instruction 
should  be sought from qualified professionals, such as  the  Na 
tional  Rifle Association.  Also,  everyone should study  unarmed 
self-defense  under  a  qualified instructor;   one  who  teaches 
combative,  not tournament techniques.

  Tactics are another important area of study. Learn how best  to 
utilize  your weapons under various conditions and  environments,  
such  as snow,  rain,  or at night. There are  several  reputedly 
good  schools for this type of study.  There are also many  books 
such as military manuals which can be of help, if accompanied  by 
lots of practice.

  Study first aid diligently,  as this is one of the most  essen 
tial areas of self help study. The American Red Cross has  excel 
lent,   inexpensive courses on CPR and basic and  advanced  first 
aid.   Everyone  should  be encouraged to take and  pass  such  a 
course.  A study of improvised medicines and first-aid  equipment 
would  also be useful. Some community colleges  offer  non-credit 
courses  in  herbology,  folk medicine, and edible  wild  plants. 
There are many very good reference books on the subject.  Another 
variation on this theme would be the study of medicinal minerals. 
You might seriously consider taking an Emergency Medical  Techni 
cian  course   (or  a Paramedic course if already  an  EMT)   and 
joining  a volunteer ambulance corps. Not only would you be  con 
tributing  to  a  vital community function,  you  would  also  be 
gaining  practical,   real-life,  hands-on  experience  which  no 
course  can  give by itself. Remember,  in a crisis,   your  body 
does  what is has been trained to do. The untrained  reaction  to 
crisis is usually panic Practical experience aids tremendously in 
overcoming the panic which accompanies disaster.

  Fieldcraft is another valuable area of study. Learn the differ 
ence between, and uses of,  cover and concealment.  Learn how  to 
survive  in rural or urban wilderness,  how to find or  construct 
proper shelter,  how to gather food and collect and purify water,  
the use of correct sanitation procedures,  basic land navigation,  
and much more.

  PRACTICE. Conduct realistic simulations with your equipment and 
your  people to gain valuable experience and  confidence  working 
together.  Get  the bugs out while it's relatively  easy.   Learn 
what works and what doesn't.

  Go  to  the firing range often,  preferably when  you  or  your
group  can  use it without onlookers.  Practice  on  human-shaped 
targets,   using  tactics.  Train in firing techniques  for  real 
world  situations  (such as varying weather  conditions,   target 
distance  and  size. Learn different firing  positions,  practice 
in-house techniques,  etc.) .  Always rigidly enforce appropriate 
safety procedures while training with weapons.

  As  an EMT,  you can work on an ambulance or in  the  emergency 
room  to  practice and to accustom yourself to the  suffering  of 
others.  It's certainly not pleasant,  but it is crucial in  over 
coming the shock of seeing something happen suddenly,  perhaps to 
someone  you  love. This allows you to get on with  treating  the 
patient rather than wasting valuable seconds in panic. With prac 
tice,   reaction  becomes almost automatic,   and  confidence  is 
gained. Without practice, hard-earned skills are gradually lost.

  You should try to incorporate your survival skills into  every 
day life,  making it a normal part of your existence.

Don't,  however,  carry it to extremes, such as walking around in 
public wearing cammies with a 10-inch knife on your belt. Be dis 
creet.  Shooting  and  hand-to-hand  practice,   ambulance  duty, 
making  your own clothes,  and canning your own food;  all  these 
skills  and more will not only add to your  survival  repertoire,  
they  will enhance the quality of your life,  as you become  less 
dependent  on "the system" and more confident in your own  abili 
ties.

  Learn  the  strengths and weaknesses of your  equipment,   your 
people,   and yourself. Without practice and effort you are  just 
wasting time and money, and someone close to you could die  need 
lessly.

  DON'T  ADVERTISE. Keep your actions and intentions as  low-pro 
file as possible. You could risk discovery and the loss of every 
thing you have been working for,  or wind up with a lot of people 
on  YOUR doorstep in a crisis;  people whom you  cannot  support,  
and  who  may have no positive survival value. If you  intend  to 
support dependents,  prepare for them with your supplies.

  One  last  thought.  Because predatory people  are  out  there,  
firearms are an essential element of survival planning.  Unfortu 
nately,   they  have been abused frequently enough  to  give  the 
whole  survival  movement  a bad reputation in the  eyes  of  the 
general media,  who too often seem to be looking to discredit and 
ridicule  the movement. Survivalists should respect firearms  and 
view  them  as  tools to protect what  they  have:  their  lives,  
families,   homes,  and provisions;  not as weapons of  conquest. 
The  more  you  prepare,  the more ready you must  be  to  defend 
against those who don't.

10 Step Survival Plan

#1 Determination- You must have the will to survive, the tools and the know how to survive.

#2 Have a Short and a Long Term Survival Plan- You have to be ready for any disaster or emergency and for any length of time. From a day to a year or more.

#3 Be and Stay Healthy- You have to be in good health to be strong, and being strong will increase you chance of survival.

#4 Practicing Your Skills- You need to use the skills you have to keep them strong and as you learn new skills you need to keep them fresh in your mind.

#5 Training- Going with number 4 you have to learn new skills, like rope making, soap making, how to grow a garden and woodworking. Having skills after a SHTF event is going to be a very important part of life.

#6 Don’t Show Off You Preparedness Items- Don’t tell, don’t talk and never show anyone your preps. If you show a friend and then he never stocks an item the second a SHTF event happens the first place he will show up is your place because what you have is part his because you have so much. When the chips are down you have no friends.

#7 You must have or Start a garden- If you don’t know how to start one then find out. Go to garden centers and see if they have a class on starting a garden. If we hope to return to prosperity, America must return to a time when families grew much of their own food. Moreover, if we find ourselves in the midst of an economic disaster, we can persevere by growing our own food in the back yard. Heirloom seeds will provide you food forever because unlike hybrid and genetically modified seeds, you can save the next generation of seeds and replant next year. Hybrids are usually sterile and their offspring are worthless. Whether by design or accident, it appears that the world is headed towards a worldwide economic and agricultural collapse you need to get some seeds now and start a garden and store some of the seeds.

#8 Guns and Ammo- First if you don’t have a gun you need one, but first take a gun safety class to learn how to use and clean a firearm. Then buy as much ammo as you can. And remember you can own more that one gun.

#9 Food and water- You have to have both and you need to store at least three months of it. The government said you need three days, hell it took them 4-5 days just to get bottled water to the flood victims in N.O. Me I have a year of food and water but to start off with go for the three months and work up. Mountain House freeze-dried foods are packed in airtight NITROGEN PACKED #10 cans and have a 25+ years of shelf-life. With a little money you can get your three months all at once.
Water is a hard one you need at least two ways to get water. One could be to store it you can get stabilized oxygen to store your water for long term.
WATER TREATMENT
This is one of the most important uses of our Stabilized Oxygen.
To keep you water safe, and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria (while in proper storage containers like 55 gallon drums), we recommend the following:
First, make sure your container is properly disinfected and clean.
If you're storing filtered water - 10 drops per gallon.
If you're using normal tap water - 20 drops per gallon.
And you need a 2nd so get a water filter system like backpacker use and have a lot of extra filters.

I calculated that this amount of food has around 1,249,329 calories which based on a 2000 calorie a day diet will provide enough food for two people for 312 days! That’s almost one whole year for two people on $5 a week! Even if the price was double that, at $10-$15 a week you’re only paying around $40-$60/month in grocery bills. Try to beat that…

100 Items To Have Before The Crap Hits The Fan

This was posted in 2008 in a fourm I go to off and on, I have posted this before but I think it needs to be seen again.

A list I give folks who show an interest in getting prepared... Now mind you nothing is in specific order of importance. Its the shock value of the list I try to get. After they've looked at it for a couple days you weed out the ones that are going to waste your time... The folks that ask questions are the ones that get it...

1. Generators: Good ones cost dearly. Diesel ones are the best. Gasoline storage can be a bit risky, Noisy... They will also be a target of thieves; maintenance etc. Permanent mounted propane units really are the best for stationary usage.

2. Water Filters/Purifiers: Berkley and Brookfield outback units have been used in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America for years.

3. Portable Toilets, buckets with lids, chamber pots. Something to remove wastes.. An Outhouse is probably best but a pain to move.

4. Seasoned Firewood: Wood takes about 6 - 12 months to become dried, for home use.

5. Lamps, lamp Oil, Wicks, spare globes and glass chimneys (First Choice: Buy CLEAR oil. If scarce, stockpile ANY!) Kerosene works in most cloth wicked lamps.

6. Coleman Fuel: It is impossible to stockpile too much.

7. Guns, Ammunition, reloading equipment, casting equipment, Pepper Spray, Knives, Clubs, Bats & Slingshots. I also suggest a compound bow or crossbow with plenty of bolts and arrow shafts for taking larger game.

8. Hand operated can openers, egg beaters, whisks, grater, and other manually operated kitchen tools and accessories.

9. Honey/Syrups/white, brown sugar. Again, something you cannot store too much of. Makes a great trade/barter item.

10. Rice - Beans – Wheat (If bought whole be sure to have a mill/grinder)

11. Vegetable Oil (for cooking) Without it food easily burns and must be boiled etc. Three gallons of oil per person per year is about right.

12. Charcoal and Lighter Fluid. (Will become scarce suddenly)

13. Water Containers (Urgent Item to obtain.) Any size. Small: HARD CLEAR PLASTIC ONLY - note - food grade poly barrels if for drinking water. 2 and 3 liter soda bottles are best. Store at least 20 gallons per person per week. Don’t forget your pets either.

16. Propane Cylinders 20# and 30# (Urgent: Definite shortages will occur. If you have empties get them filled or exchanged.)

17. Survival Guide Book. Mostly for entertainment purposes..

18. Mantles for Aladdin lamps, Coleman lamps, and replacement cotton wicks for liquid/oil lamps (Without these items, longer-term lighting is difficult.)

19. Baby Supplies: Diapers/formula, ointments, aspirin, Tylenol, etc.

20. Washboards, Mop, mop Bucket w/wringer (for laundry and cleaning)

21. Cook stoves and lots of spares.(Propane, Coleman fuel & Kerosene)

22. Vitamins, trace minerals, stock up on vitamin C, Zinc, and Calcium.

23. Propane Cylinder Handle-Holder (Urgent: Small canister use is dangerous without this item)

24. Feminine Hygiene, Hair care items, Skin products.

25. Thermal underwear (Tops & Bottoms)

26. Bow saws and extra blades, axes, hatchets, wedges, hack saws and extra blades. (also, whetstone and honing oil)

27. Aluminum Foil Reg. & Heavy Duty (Great Cooking and Barter Item)

28. Gasoline Containers (Plastic & Metal)

29. Garbage Bags (Impossible To Have Too Many)

30. Toilet paper, Kleenex, paper towels, and paper napkins. Toilet paper is cheap now but becomes very, very valuable when nobody can get any.

31. Milk - Powdered & Condensed. Follow rotational standards set forth by the expiration dates on the product. (Shake Liquid every 3 to 4 months)

32. Garden Seeds (Non-Hybrid and/or Heirloom) (AN ABSOLUTE MUST)

33. Clothes pins clothes line, clothes hangers (AN ABSOLUTE MUST)

34. Coleman's Pump Repair Kit Get several along with cork filler seals.

35. Tuna Fish (in Oil and in Spring Water) Tuna in oil has higher density of nutrition.

36. Fire Extinguishers or a large box of Baking Soda in every room. Buckets of children’s play sand also.

37. First aid kits (Commercial or home-made) Include manuals if necessary. Nitrile gloves since some are allergic to latex.

38. Batteries (all sizes...buy furthest-out for Expiration Dates) You can never have too many batteries. Great trade and barter item.

39. Garlic, spices & vinegar, baking supplies.

40. Have Dogs? Big Dogs require plenty of dog food both canned and dry, mostly dry. Great security so feed them well and keep treats if budget allows. Keep medications like flea treatments and heartworm pills for at least a year.

41. Bulk flour, yeast, beans, rice, sugar, pepper, & salt by the bag or box. Freeze the flour, beans, and rice for 48 hours before putting into final storage. It kills any bugs that might have gotten in to the bags. (Vacuum sealer is a good investment)

42. Matches {"Strike Anywhere" preferred.) Boxed, wooden matches will go first. Old chain Grocery stores are best source. BIC lighters, Zippo’s, and refillable butane lighters and an ample supply of butane and Ronsol/Zippo lighter fluid. You can use the “flint” from a BIC brand lighter after it runs out of fuel in your Zippo’s. Or use them in a 22lr HP projectile against hard targets with flammables around.

43. Writing paper, pads, pens and pencils, solar calculators, erasers,

44. Insulated ice chests (good for keeping items from freezing in Winter time.)

45. Work boots, belts, Levies & durable shirts. Good stuff not cheap.

46. Flashlights/LIGHTSTICKS & torches, "No. 76 Dietz" Lanterns, Oil Lamps, LED head lamps and flashlights.

47. Journals, Diaries & Scrapbooks (Write down ideas, feelings, experience; Historic Times) Keep dry with heavy duty Ziploc freezer bags.

48. Garbage cans Metal or Plastic (great for storage, water, transporting - if with wheels) Appropriate sized trash bags as well. Steel drum for burning trash is also a recommended item as well.

49. Men's Hygiene: Shampoo, Toothbrush/paste, Mouthwash/floss, nail
Clippers, razors, shaving cream, etc

50. Cast iron cookware (sturdy, efficient) Cast iron Dutch ovens too.

51. Fishing supplies, rods and reels, lures, and tools. Worm bed in your yard is best source for bait.

52. Mosquito coils, repellent, sprays and creams

53. Duct Tape, Electrical tape, masking tape and lots of it.

54. Tarps, stakes, twine, nails, rope, spikes, ratchet straps

55. Candles Emergency type, not just fancy ones from the Hallmark store.

56. Laundry Detergent. Liquid and powder both have their uses.

57. Backpacks, Duffel Bags, Military Surplus Alice packs w/frames

58. Garden tools & supplies- Shovels, rakes, hoes, 10-10-10 fertilizer, powdered lime, etc.

59. Scissors, fabrics & sewing supplies and a book if necessary.

60. Canned Fruits, Veggies, Soups, Stews, gravy, olives, pickles, etc.

61. Bleach (plain, NOT scented: 4 to 6% sodium hypochlorite) Pool “Shock” treatment will make gallons upon gallons of bleach.

62. Canning supplies- Jars, lids and bands, wax, pectin, pressure canning pot, hot jar clamp, canning thermometer, and a canning book or two. Pectin and paraffin wax also.

63. Knives & Sharpening tools: files, stones, steel, honing fluid

64. Bicycles...Extra tires, tubes, pumps, chains, etc

65. Sleeping Bags & blankets, pillows, mats, inflatable mattresses, extra sheet sets,

66. Carbon Monoxide detectors and smoke alarms. (Battery powered)

67. Boredom busting- Board Games, Cards, Dice, etc. But nothing that requires batteries like a Game Boy or Nintendo.

68. D-con Rat poison, MOUSE PRUFE II, Roach Killer, or 22lr shot shells and a 22 pistol to take out mice and rats. Poison has other uses too..

70. Paper plates/cups/utensils. (stock up, folks)

71. Baby wipes, bulk paper towels, essential oils, waterless & antibacterial soap. (saves a lot of water)

72. Rain gear, rubberized boots, ponchos, rain suits, etc.

There are many horrible things that can happen during a war or complete shutdown of America’s infrastructure - Death of Parents, siblings, and friends, hunger and malnutrition, endless freezing cold or boiling heat, fear, theft, direct attacks by people homeless and starving, and possibly sniper attacks.

1. Stockpiling helps. But you never no how long trouble will last, so locate nearby or develop your own renewable food sources.

2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden.

3. After awhile, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's.

4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to do without (Especially if you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.)

5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of the dry unappetizing things you’ve stocked to eat during a crisis somewhat edible. Only needs enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in bulk.

6. Have lots of books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more valuable as an event continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll have a lot of time on your hands.

7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many people who will trade a much needed meal for just a little bit of toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Not much point in surviving if you have to lose your humanity. These things are morale-builders like nothing else.

The police brutality against peaceful protesters in Berkeley, Davis, Oakland and elsewhere is bad enough.
But next week, Congress will vote on explicitly creating a police state.
The ACLU’s Washington legislative office explains:

The Senate is gearing up for a vote on Monday or Tuesday that goes to the very heart of who we are as Americans. The Senate will be voting on a bill that will direct American military resources not at an enemy shooting at our military in a war zone, but at American citizens and other civilians far from any battlefield — even people in the United States itself.

The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world.

The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself. The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday.

I know it sounds incredible. New powers to use the military worldwide, even within the United States? Hasn’t anyone told the Senate that Osama bin Laden is dead, that the president is pulling all of the combat troops out of Iraq and trying to figure out how to get combat troops out of Afghanistan too? And American citizens and people picked up on American or Canadian or British streets being sent to military prisons indefinitely without even being charged with a crime. Really? Does anyone think this is a good idea? And why now?

In support of this harmful bill, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield” and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial “American citizen or not.” Another supporter, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) also declared that the bill is needed because “America is part of the battlefield.”

The senators pushing the indefinite detention proposal have made their goals very clear that they want an okay for a worldwide military battlefield, that even extends to your hometown.

Part of an Ongoing Trend

While this is shocking, it is not occurring in a vacuum. Indeed, it is part of a 30 year-long process of militarization inside our borders and a destruction of the American concepts of limited government and separation of powers.
As I pointed out in May:

As I noted in 2008:
An article in the Army Times reveals that the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team will be redeployed from Iraq to domestic operationswithin the United States.
The unit will soon be under the day-to-day control of US Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command. The Army Times reports this new mission marks the first time an active unit has been given a dedicated assignment to Northern Command. The paper says the Army unit may be called upon to help with “civil unrest” and “crowd control”.
The soldiers are learning to use so-called “nonlethal weapons” designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals and crowds.
This violates posse comitatus and the Constitution. But, hey, we’re in a “national emergency”, so who cares, right?
(We’re still in a declared state of national emergency).
I noted a couple of months later:
Everyone knows that deploying 20,000 troops on U.S. soil violates Posse Comitatus and the Constitution.
And everyone understands that staging troops within the U.S. to “help out with civil unrest and crowd control” increases the danger of overt martial law.
But no one is asking an obvious question: Does the government’s own excuse for deploying the troops make any sense?
Other Encroachments On Civil Rights Under Obama
As bad as Bush was, the truth is that, in many ways, freedom and constitutional rights are under attack even more than during the Bush years.
For example:
Obama has presided over the most draconian crackdown on leaks in our history — even more so than Nixon.
As Marjorie Cohen – professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and past president of the National Lawyers Guild – writes at the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy:
Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, who is facing court-martial for leaking military reports and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, is being held in solitary confinement in Quantico brig in Virginia. Each night, he is forced to strip naked and sleep in a gown made of coarse material. He has been made to stand naked in the morning as other inmates walked by and looked. As journalist Lance Tapley documents in his chapter on torture in the supermax prisons in The United States and Torture, solitary confinement can lead to hallucinations and suicide; it is considered to be torture. Manning’s forced nudity amounts to humiliating and degrading treatment, in violation of U.S. and international law.
Nevertheless, President Barack Obama defended Manning’s treatment, saying, “I’ve actually asked the Pentagon whether or not the procedures . . . are appropriate. They assured me they are.” Obama’s deference is reminiscent of President George W. Bush, who asked “the most senior legal officers in the U.S. government” to review the interrogation techniques. “They assured me they did not constitute torture,” Bush said.

After State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley criticized Manning’s conditions of confinement, the White House forced him to resign. Crowley had said the restrictions were “ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid.” It appears that Washington is more intent on sending a message to would-be whistleblowers than on upholding the laws that prohibit torture and abuse.

Torture is commonplace in countries strongly allied with the United States. Vice President Omar Suleiman, Egypt’s intelligence chief, was the lynchpin for Egyptian torture when the CIA sent prisoners to Egypt in its extraordinary rendition program. A former CIA agent observed, “If you want a serious interrogation, you send a prisoner to Jordan. If you want them to be tortured, you send them to Syria. If you want someone to disappear – never to see them again – you send them to Egypt.” In her chapter in The United States and Torture, New Yorker journalist Jane Mayer cites Egypt as the most common destination for suspects rendered by the United States.
As I pointed out in March:
Former constitutional law teacher Glenn Greenwald says that – in his defense of state secrecy, illegal spying, preventative detention, harassment of whistleblowers and other issues of civil liberties – Obama is even worsethan Bush.
Indeed, Obama has authorized “targeted assassinations” against U.S. citizens. Even Bush didn’t openly do something so abhorrent to the rule of law.
Obama is trying to expand spying well beyond the Bush administration’s programs. Indeed, the Obama administration is arguing that citizens shouldnever be able to sue the government for illegal spying.
Obama’s indefinite detention policy is an Orwellian nightmare, which willcreate more terrorists.
Furthermore – as hard as it is for Democrats to believe – the disinformation and propaganda campaigns launched by Bush have only increased under Obama. See thisand this.
And as I pointed out last year:
According to Department of Defense training manuals, protest is considered “low-level terrorism”. And see this, this and this.
An FBI memo also labels peace protesters as “terrorists”.

A 2003 FBI memo describes protesters’ use of videotaping as an “intimidation” technique, even though – as the ACLU points out – “Most mainstream demonstrators often use videotape during protests to document law enforcement activity and, more importantly, deter police from acting outside the law.” The FBI appears to be objecting to the use of cameras to document unlawful behavior by law enforcement itself.
The Internet has been labeled as a breeding ground for terrorists, with anyone who questions the government’s versions of history being especially equated with terrorists.
Government agencies such as FEMA are allegedly teaching that the Founding Fathers should be considered terrorists.
The government is also using anti-terrorism laws to keep people from learning what pollutants are in their own community. See this, this, this andthis.
Claims of “national security” are also used to keep basic financial information – such as who got bailout money – secret. That might not bode for particularly warm and friendly treatment for someone persistently demanding the release of such information.
The state of Missouri tried to label as terrorists current Congressman Ron Paul and his supporters, former Congressman Bob Barr, libertarians in general, anyone who holds gold, and a host of other people.
And according to a law school professor and former president of the National Lawyers Guild, pursuant to the Military Commissions Act:
Anyone who … speaks out against the government’s policies could be declared an “unlawful enemy combatant” and imprisoned indefinitely. That includes American citizens.
Obama has refused to reverse these practices.

There Is Still a Chance to Stop It

The ACLU notes that there is some hope:

But there is a way to stop this dangerous legislation. Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) is offering the Udall Amendment that will delete the harmful provisions and replace them with a requirement for an orderly Congressional review of detention power. The Udall Amendment will make sure that the bill matches up with American values.

The solution is the Udall Amendment; a way for the Senate to say no to indefinite detention without charge or trial anywhere in the world where any president decides to use the military. Instead of simply going along with a bill that was drafted in secret and is being jammed through the Senate, the Udall Amendment deletes the provisions and sets up an orderly review of detention power. It tries to take the politics out and put American values back in.

Now is the time to stop this bad idea. Please urge your senators to vote YES on the Udall Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act.

Has anyone else noticed that America seems to be going crazy? I’m not talking about the “woo hoo – let go out and have some fun” kind of crazy. I’m talking about the “lock them up in the looney bin” kind of crazy.

Our society is rapidly coming apart at the seams and people are seriously starting to lose it. Criminals are going crazy, young people are going crazy, children are going crazy, law enforcement authorities are going crazy and the federal government is most certainly going crazy. Way too many Americans seem to be losing all sense of what is right and what is wrong. Way too many Americans seem to be losing all sense of what it means to treat others with dignity and respect. Yes, the economy is falling apart and people are feeling the stress of hard times, but it goes much deeper than that. It is almost as if some sort of mental illness is spreading throughout our society that is expressing itself in thousands of different ways. We are seeing anger, rage, malice and brutality rise to very dangerous levels. Our population has become way too greedy, proud, selfish and hateful. America is on a very dangerous road and we need to wake up.

The following list could contain thousands of examples, but hopefully the 20 signs listed below will be enough to convince you that America is rapidly going crazy….

#1 We are continuing to see mobs of criminals looting retail stores all over the United States. For example, last Saturday night a “flash mob” of approximately 50 young people looted a 7-11 in Silver Spring, Maryland.

#2 Respect for the elderly has totally gone out the window in America. For example, down in Georgia two “caregivers” were recently charged with waterboarding an 89-year-old woman that they were supposed to be taking care of….

Clayton County police said Jermeller Steed and Cicely Reed held down Anna Foley after an argument that started over ice cream.

#3 When the federal government first began putting naked body scanners into airports and began implementing “enhanced pat-downs” of travelers, many warned that hordes of sicko perverts would start applying for jobs with the TSA. Well, it turns out that one TSA employee is now being charged with a nightmarish sexual assault. The following is how WJLA in Washington D.C. describes what he is being charged with….

The suspect, Harold Glen Rodman, 52, allegedly was wearing his uniform and displayed a badge to the victim, a 37-year-old woman.

Police arrested Rodman on Nov. 20. He is charged with aggravated sexual battery, object sexual penetration, forcible sodomy and abduction with intent to defile.

#4 We have been seeing some really bizarre sexual crimes all over the country lately. The following examples comes from a town where I once lived….

Multiple male victims have reported being sexually assaulted by a male suspect in a series of nighttime incidents at residences near the University of Virginia, according to police and university officials.

Larceny is not a motive, and in each case victims reported awakening to find themselves being groped, officials said.

#5 Sadly, our society has become so “sexualized” that now even little children are raping each other. Just check out the following recent example from Ohio….

Authorities in southwest Ohio have charged a 13-year-old boy with raping a 5-year-old girl at a McDonald’s play area.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the alleged assault occurred Oct. 29 at a McDonald’s in the Cincinnati suburb of Anderson Township. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Barnett says the girl’s grandmother was nearby in the restaurant at the time.

#6 Today, there are millions of Americans with STDs that are running around thoughtlessly passing them on to others. According to the CDC, there are 19 million new cases of STD infection in the United States every single year.

#7 As I wrote about the other day, all over the United States law enforcement authorities are spraying pepper spray directly into the faces of unarmed protesters. Pepper spray can kill you. According to Wikipedia, the use of pepper spray by police has been associated with dozens of deaths in the United States….

For those with asthma, taking other drugs, or subject to restraining techniques which restrict the breathing passages, there is a risk of death. The Los Angeles Times has reported at least 61 deaths associated with police use of pepper spray since 1990 in the USA.

#8 Predators are increasingly using websites such as Craigslist to find victims for their next crimes. The following comes from a recent article in the Columbus Dispatch….

Lost, covered in his own blood and unsure if the men who hunted him were still nearby, a man from South Carolina hid in the forested hills outside Caldwell until after dark on Nov. 6. Deciding it was safe, he then made a painful 2-mile journey to the nearest farmhouse to call for help.

Investigators say he was the lucky one.

On Tuesday, they found the body of a man buried in a shallow grave near the site where the other man was attacked.

By surviving his ordeal two weeks ago in Noble County, the victim, whose name authorities haven’t released, helped uncover an elaborate scheme by at least two men to lure people with the promise of work from across the country to Ohio. Authorities say the real plan was to rob and kill them.

#9 With all of the other problems we are having all over the nation, you would think that authorities would not be too concerned about little kids that are trying to sell cups of lemonade. But sadly, over the past year police have been sent in to shut down lemonade stands run by children all over the nation.

#10 The family unit continues to crumble in America. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, 68% of all twenty-somethings were married in 1960. By 2008, that number had fallen to 26%.

#11 Many Americans would rather not deal with all of the problems in society and would rather “check out” instead. For example, a recent Gallup poll found that alcohol consumption in the United States is now at a 25 year high.

#12 The federal government has become so paranoid that they have been putting GPS tracking devices on the vehicles of thousands of people that have not even been charged with committing any crimes. The following is a short excerpt from a recent Wired magazine article about this issue….

The 25-year-old resident of San Jose, California, says he found the first one about three weeks ago on his Volvo SUV while visiting his mother in Modesto, about 80 miles northeast of San Jose. After contacting Wired and allowing a photographer to snap pictures of the device, it was swapped out and replaced with a second tracking device. A witness also reported seeing a strange man looking beneath the vehicle of the young man’s girlfriend while her car was parked at work, suggesting that a tracking device may have been retrieved from her car.

Then things got really weird when police showed up during a Wired interview with the man.

The young man, who asked to be identified only as Greg, is one among an increasing number of U.S. citizens who are finding themselves tracked with the high-tech devices.

The Justice Department has said that law enforcement agents employ GPS as a crime-fighting tool with “great frequency,”and GPS retailers have told Wired that they’ve sold thousands of the devices to the feds.

#13 Many Americans are so frustrated right now that even the smallest things will make them go crazy. For example, one man down in Georgia recentlyfirebombed a Taco Bell because they did not put enough meat in his Chalupa.

#14 All over the state of California, copper thieves are ripping the wire right out of thousands of streetlights and are leaving huge areas completely dark at night. For example, just check out what is happening in the Sacramento area….

Sacramento County officials said 1,000 street lights have been affected by wire theft in recent weeks, and the county has already spent $160,000 repairing street lights this year.

#15 The way that our government has treated those that have served in the military has been absolutely shameful. For example, according to the Washington Post between 2003 and 2008 the remains of large numbers of our war dead were actually dumped into a Virginia landfill….

The Dover Air Force Base mortuary for years disposed of portions of troops’ remains by cremating them and dumping the ashes in a Virginia landfill, a practice that officials have since abandoned in favor of burial at sea.

#16 Nothing is too big for thieves to steal these days. In the San Francisco area, thieves recently took off with a copper bell that weighs 2.7 tons.

#17 Some thieves have become so bold that they will literally steal thousands of animals at a time from ranchers. All over the United States, livestock is being stolen from ranchers in unprecedented numbers. The following is from a recent Associated Press article….

While the brazenness may be unusual, the theft isn’t. High beef prices have made cattle attractive as a quick score for people struggling in the sluggish economy, and other livestock are being taken too. Six thousand lambs were stolen from a feedlot in Texas, and nearly 1,000 hogs have been stolen in recent weeks from farms in Iowa and Minnesota. The thefts add up to millions of dollars in losses for U.S. ranches.

Authorities say today’s thieves are sophisticated compared to the horseback bandits of the rugged Old West. They pull up livestock trailers in the middle of the night and know how to coax the animals inside. Investigators suspect it’s then a quick trip across state lines to sell the animals at auction barns.

#18 The federal government is way too large and is interfering way too much in our lives. All of us should be horrified that the feds are spending a significant amount of time and energy on raiding organic farms. The following examplecomes from Natural News….

It is the latest case of extreme government food tyranny, and one that is sure to have you reeling in anger and disgust. Health department officials recently conducted a raid of Quail Hollow Farm, an organic community supported agriculture (CSA) farm in southern Nevada, during its special “farm to fork” picnic dinner put on for guests — and the agent who arrived on the scene ordered that all the fresh, local produce and pasture-based meat that was intended for the meal be destroyed with bleach.

#19 Most of the big regulatory agencies of the federal government have totally gone crazy. For example, the EPA is now specifically targeting Americans that use traditional wood-burning stoves.

#20 Large numbers of Americans simply do not seem to care what happens to those around them any longer. As I discussed in another recent article, some of the things that we are now seeing young people do are almost unbelievable. For example, just check out this video of a young punk walking up to a defenseless elderly man in a Chicago subway station and knocking him out cold. What makes this incident far worse is that the friends of the young thug are cheering him on and laughing at how easy it was to knock the old man out cold.

Things could have been so much different. But now we are watching the consequences of decades of really bad decisions unfold right in front of our eyes.

THE COMING WARLORDS

When governments fail, or are too weak to control the outlying provinces, warlords arise and take over those regions where there is no order. Throughout the Middle Ages in Europe and England, men little better than bandit chieftains established their rule over populations too weak to protect themselves. Lest the king bring together his troops and wipe out these bandits, they often pledged a kind of loose loyalty to the Crown and were given sanction to keep their territory. The king often granted such titles because the region wasn't worth his effort to conquer it. This was Feudalism and the warlords became titled lords and servants of the king and had the power of life and death over their subjects. The warlord part came in because neighboring bandits, or even other sanctioned lords were a constant threat to the territory. So the warlord had to be fighting off competitors on a pretty constant basis. In China, for quite awhile before Sun Yat Sen took over in 1911, that large country, too, was controlled by bandit warlords, often with no sanction from the weak central government. Nearly every American Indian chief was a warlord. With the formation of a strong central government, governors are appointed or elected. Since they can be recalled by the central government or voted out of office, they cannot be considered warlords. Heads of regional National Guard units are the nearest thing we have to warlords. They are held in readiness to put down civil disturbances, help out in cases of earthquakes, floods, or to bear the brunt of an enemy attack. Even so, their leaders are not warlords in the actual sense, because they have no authority over the general populace, except by order of the governor. Following the collapse of every civilization, warlords have sprung up to consolidate the territory they inhabited and to fend off neighboring warlords who wanted more. When our world system dies, Feudalism will again rise to replace the destroyed or critically weakened central governments. Upon the collapse of our civilization, due to war, economic blowout, an overload of degenerate dependents, or a combination of several factors, each region will be on its own. Aside from the big cities, which will perish in a burst of rioting, burning and plague, only the towns will be worth defending and so what I call warlords will not only be inevitable, but necessary. It might be commonly supposed that a modern warlord would be the district military commander. But military people are not qualified to administer local governments serving their national populaces. They might be used to head the local National Guard and serve in a purely defensive capacity. Their main function would be to fend off bands of refugees from the cities. Such refugees would be plentiful, desperate and useless to the local economy. Purely military units would be necessary to reroute them around the town and escort them out of the country, or slaughter them if such had to be done. After the initial fighting off of outsiders, the military types could be assimilated into the population, since they are used to discipline and could pitch into any community endeavor. You might consider the County Sheriff as the likeliest candidate for warlord, but he would not qualify. First, he is an elected official. As such, he is usually corrupt and in any case would not be adequate to administer to the needs of the towns under his jurisdiction. His staff might be excellent, but they are mainly involved in policing the outlying districts and are not familiar enough with the workings of the towns to administer. Forget the mayor. Another politician, he is a dingbat by nature, usually senile, and so crooked he needs his own accountant to keep him from cheating himself. In fact, any elected official should be automatically written off as a choice for warlord. Politicians have no other goals in life but to get and keep a place at the public trough. Therefore, they are natural parasites and are incapable of any gainful or useful employment. This is partly because their training consists mainly in appealing to the lowest common denominators in their constituency. In other words, they make their appeals to the average. As you well know, the average voter is a grasping ignoramous who believes the world owes him a living. So successful politicians are skillful only in telling the voters what most of them want to hear. Consequently, the most incompetent and unscrupulous get elected. I'm sure you've listened to President Carter. As aimless and moronic as is his political performance, he can give an off-the-cuff speech which projects hope to the hopeless and intelligence to the pseudo-intellectuals. This shows political refinement but such is the opposite of true qualifications for effective leadership. A local politician is so clumsy and obvious that he sounds like Captain Kangaroo addressing the residents of Sesame Street. The congressman representing my district is a dumbbell but has turned political degeneracy into an art form. I know these things because I live in Eureka. Eurekans are barely conscious, a fourth of them on welfare and many of the rest working on Federally subsidized projects. You can easily imagine the level of ethics and competency of our mayor, D.A., sheriff and city council. So politicians are out as warlords. In the more extreme category, are militant political groups and outlaw bikers. The political militants would be the first to be wiped out by the local militia. Many political militants fantasize that when the government collapses, the people will clamor for their bizarre solutions. As an ex-right wing fanatic, I realize my old comrades and their counterparts on the left would be lucky to be left alive in any community they tried to take over. Several readers have expressed concern that I am advocating rule by people like those in WHEELS OF RAGE. Actually, WHEELS was a satire on bikers in general. Its characters were composites of cronies I used to run around with. Even the best of bikers would be incompetent to be warlords. It's true that their kind became warlords during the Middle Ages. But then, as now, they were thugs. The thugs of the Middle Ages simply enslaved the populace. There was little or no progress under their rule and only when power was wrested from them was civilization allowed to mature. Bands of bikers might effectively protect communal groups from similar bandits. But to allow them any official authority over such a group would be disastrous. The best choice for warlord would be your local chief of police. In most cases, he is well trained, efficient, conscientious, courageous and honest. He generally knows more about the community than any other man in town. He is also mature enough to establish martial law in the best interests of the majority of the population. He could be trusted to appoint the people best able to bring the townsfolk through the crisis. Furthermore, he would be the most likely to step down when order was established and delegate authority to those professional people of merit who could run the town without coercion. Only the police chief could justly implement the harsh measures a warlord would have to impose on the populace. Not caring to remain warlord, as would a politician or military officer, the police chief could establish internal and external security, regardless of criticism. Like a surgeon cutting out cancer, a police chief could objectively eliminate the local parasites. A politician could never kill a degenerate whom he would later depend upon for votes. Since austerity would be a fact of life for some time, the local parasites would have to be destroyed. This would entail rounding up all habitual criminals, pimps and their whores, sex offenders, long-term able-bodied welfare recipients, winos and drug addicts, taking them out to the edge of town and killing them. There would be no practical reason for letting them survive. To enslave them would mean appointing guards with better uses to the community. To turn them loose would only be to inflict the vermin on decent people in other towns. If this seems harsh, consider; the collapse of world civilization will bring about such death and suffering that eliminating a town's criminals and assorted parasitical trash will be easy. Especially when you consider that the survival of the good people of the town will be accomplished only through great hardship and austerity enough without the town's predators and social refuse. The next task of the warlord would be a touchy one indeed. This would be the elimination of the town's hopelessly retarded, mentally incompetent, terminally ill and dependent aged. They will not survive anyway, and prolonging their lives would be not only a waste of precious resources, but would be an actual cruelty. Such an unwelcome task would have to be delegated to the town's most respected physicians, who would give injections to their hopeless cases. Lest parents and relatives protest on behalf of their loved ones, they would have the final decision. In such cases, those closest to the useless would be given sleepy-by pills by the doctors to be administered when their misplaced altruism was overcome by the reality of the situation. The warlord's only responsibility in the elimination of the physically and mentally hopeless, aside from authorizing the program, would be to see that no food or medicines out of the common store would be given to the hopeless. If relatives insisted on preserving such blighted dependents, they must do so out of their own rations. In the event of a war or upon the general recognition of the permanent collapse of civilization, the populace would panic. The warlord's first duty would be to station armed personnel in stores holding food, medicines, tools, weapons, and anything the community would need to survive. This does not mean the contents of the stores would be confiscated. Personal property is more than a right. It's a necessity. The store owner knows his inventory and how best to distribute it. Since he had the initiative to accumulate the supplies, he would most likely be able to get more, if possible. For these reasons, he must be left in proprietorship. If he is alienated by having his stock confiscated, he will be unlikely to cooperate in making or securing more supplies. Rather than confiscating the stock, it might prove practical to remove it to a common building more easily defended but with the inventory under the owner's continued proprietorship. In this way, for instance, all the contents of all the pharmacies could be removed to a common building and the respective owners could then cooperate in rationing the drugs and medicines, taking in exchange barter goods or whatever served as currency during the emergency. Without such a system, stores would be looted of their most attractive contents. The less attractive wares, and possibly the most useful, would be trampled and destroyed. After the worthless and hopeless members of the town were disposed of and the stores, utilities and other town necessities were secured, an individual census should be taken. Every householder should declare all his belongings. Again, private property rights must be respected, especially among those who have stocked up in anticipation of the collapse. The Survivalists will be the most important people in the region and consequently, the most supportive of the warlord. Their surplus might also be stored in common warehouses. But they must not be confiscated and distributed for the "public good". The only commodities which should be distributed to the general populace should be food from the supermarkets. The perishables will have to be distributed immediately, but with I.O.U.'s given to the proprietor by the warlord. The warlord will, in turn, collect I.O.U.'s from the recipients, to be paid for with work on public projects, especially agriculture. Since the majority of the town's food supply is brought in from outlying areas, food will be critical. The current supply must be strictly rationed as no new stock will be brought in. The warlord must appoint agriculturists to supervise the cultivation of all arable land in the area. Even so, the survivalist with a year's supply of food must be allowed to keep it. In turn, he will not draw on the communal food supply except by trading his surplus for food items he lacks. Every citizen should be required to submit a list of his possessions; food, tools, weapons, etc. Again, nothing must be confiscated, but aside from food, surplus tools, weapons, etc., should be freely loaned for the common good. There is an interesting incident on page 481 of LUCIFER'S HAMMER, by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. It tells of a farmer who had far more than he could use and didn't report it. He also took the help of those around him without meaning to help them in return. They took everything he had and drove him out. He took his wife and kids out and was probably eaten by the roving cannibals. He deserved it. So a warlord must be an administrator, judge, fighter, tactician and a sincere protector of his charges. The idea of a warlord being a tyrant is absurd in America. There will be enough killing to last everyone a lifetime without the warlord turning on his own. That's why only the most responsible and able should become warlords. The new warlords will save the culture, if anyone can. Only the local police chiefs qualify in all areas of such a responsibility. Only the police chief can properly choose townsmen to be deputized to help defend the region. And he can well realize that his deputies will eliminate him if he turns on the people. Supporting your local police is not simply a slogan. There will come a time, and soon, when your local police chief might save you and everything you hold dear.

"BugOut" From 1981

SCRIPT OUTLINE FOR "BUGOUT"
The Collapse has come and the American people have finally
awakened from the American Dream to a nightmare reality. A little
over a month has passed since the announcement of the bankruptcy of
Social Security and all its backup systems.
     Millions being unloaded from the Social Security system to the
already reeling welfare systems have caused a halt in most social
programs. The cities are racked with violence, looting and
wholesale slaughter. City police forces are quickly decimated. As
fast as suburban police units are called in, they disappear, either
deserting or dying in the street fighting.
     National Guard units are giving up as their members quit and
go home to protect their own. Army units not slated for the Middle
East are sent to contain the rioters and keep them inside the
cities proper.
     Social services and most utilities have broken down in most
cities and their suburbs. All stores have been emptied, either by
looters or their owners, of all food and commodities used on a
day-to-day basis.
     Suburbanites are getting hungry and crowds of neighbors are
making house-to-house searches for stored food supplies. Water is
in short supply as hot water tanks, car radiators and toilet boxes
are emptied for drinking.
     The commercial trucks are either out of gas or cargo. No help
is expected by anyone. Trucks appearing in the suburbs are
privately owned or stolen and guarded by armed profiteers. Their
cargos are food, medicines, warm clothing, flashlight batteries and
anything else in short supply.
     A street sweeper with its water tank filled from a ditch
somewhere, appears to sell the precious fluid to the highest
bidder. "Only gold, silver, jewelry; just what we can carry. No
bills, yells its new owner, as his sidekick points a shotgun at the
customers.
     A frail old man leaves his home with a bucket and a pocket
full of gold coins. "All I have you'd want is a Krugerrand. Can't
you make change? Can't you come back until this is used up?"
     "Hell no," says Sam.
     "But this Krugerrand cost me $600.00," whines the old man.
     "So," laughs Sam, "You just bought yourself a $600.00 bucket
of water."
     Elsewhere a $3,000.00 diamond buys a can of asparagus. Five
aspirins for a sick child costs one mother her wedding ring.
     Urban survivalists shoot on sight, littering streets with the
bodies of both foragers and passers-by. The noise and the bodies
aid mobs of marauders in finding more food caches. Most urban
Survivalists are burned out, dying with their destroyed supplies.
     The brownouts continue and everyone who dares the street goes
armed. Few believe the town's emergency power system can last long.
     Phil Blake shoots no one, except the three revolutionaries he
caught running away from the Glen Ellyn, Illinois power plant where
he worked the evening shift. He got them all but the electricity
went off when the case of dynamite took out the transformer.
     Driving down back streets away from the prowling suburbanites
he remembers his wife insisting, "But the government will do
something." It didn't. "People will work together." They didn't,
except in temporary cooperative looting.
     When he reaches his darkened house he gives the password and
Greta opens the door. She only lowers her pistol when she
recognizes him by the light of the penlight she holds.
     "Are you ready to relocate now," he asks sarcastically. She
doesn't answer but helps him load the four year old twins into the
cab of their camper-backed pickup.
     There is no room in back as it is filled with survival
supplies he had been gathering for months. This was his Bugout
vehicle. He had begun preparing it between silly arguments with
Greta about leaving such a good job, now non-existant. Also, good
friends, two of whom she had been forced to shoot that afternoon
when they had threatened to kill the children unless she gave them
food.
     As the truck moves out of the yard the moonlit sky is further
illuminated by three flashes of blinding light. Three warheads out
of the ten aimed at Chicago have hit at 11:00 P.M.
     As the three mushroom clouds converge in a ragged atomic
umbrella twenty miles away, earth tremors shake the street as Phil,
with lights out, makes his way down Park Blvd. to 55.
     The goal is Harrison, Arkansas where Phil's friend has a
doomsday ready survival complex. The object is to get there before
Doomsday begins, if it hasn't already.
     In the twelve miles between Glen Ellyn and 55, Phil has to
shoot three people who try to open the truck door as he slows for
obstacles. Whether they are looters or just wanted a ride is of no
importance.
     The twelve miles to 55 takes over an hour. The 267
Interchange is surprisingly clear and Phil has to use his truck to
push only one car out of his path.
     The highway seems clear except for scattered vehicles
abandoned and looted. Phil's Geiger counter is beginning to
crackle even though the slight breeze is blowing toward Chicago.
     On 55 Phil averages between 20 and 80 miles an hour. Near the
larger towns the interchanges are so clogged with stalled and
wrecked vehicles, Phil has to go around on side roads.
     Leaving Interchange 33, Phil drives straight down to Chester,
bypassing St. Louis and crossing the Mississippi River at 9:00 A.M.
     The next several hundred miles are a nightmare of detours, gas
foraging and shootouts with both looters and citizens guarding
their territories. They have escaped serious radiation from
Chicago as well as from the atomic pile which had been St. Louis.
     Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas are one great fortress
protected by hillbillies made savage by the events of the past few
weeks and hours. Nearly every road is blocked and guarded by armed
citizens, shooting or turning away refugees.
     Killer caravans form, made up of desperate refugees
cooperating in storming checkpoints. Most of them simply want to
get to a blocked destination.
     Outside Mountain Home, Arkansas Phil comes upon a firefight
between Caravaneers and a small group of townies. He must decide
whether to join the Caravaneers or side with the outgunned townies.
     Since this is their territory Phil makes the tactical decision
of getting with the townies. He turns on the Caravaneers and after
shotgunning six they retreat.
     The townies then let him through for a safe passage to
Harrison. This is the end of the beginning.

SURVIVAL THINKING From The 70's Still Good Info

     Dave Font asks for an article on how to think; or
how to put together all the confusing issues working up to the
crash into a set of workable rules. Throughout the letter columns
many have expressed confusion over how to handle all the
conflicting attitudes between survivalists and standing up to the
scoffing of non-survivalists.
     So many have said they felt alone in their thinking until they
read my works or those of other professional survivalists. Others
told of the walls they ran up against when they tried to convince
friends that civilization was in real trouble.
     What I'm going to try to do in this editorial is set up a
system of ideas which will give the survivalist a feeling of
rightness in his stand. I'd like to establish a kind of
belongingness among individuals who are widely separated.
     No one likes to feel he is alone in his thinking, unless he is
a paranoid fantasizing that he's the only one who has the truth.
Paranoids in the field just stumble on it. Without survivalism,
they would just as likely have fancied themselves in contact with
beings from outer space who would take them off the planet at the
last minute.
     But normal survivalists need a set of common sources of
identification so they will not think they are paranoid. Also, such
an identification would be useful in keeping the survivalist from
getting discouraged when people scoff at his preparations.
     Well, the survivalist is a loner by necessity, now. There are
no real groups to join, no armbands to wear, no dues to pay, no
demonstrations to participate in. So a survivalist can easily feel
very different from those around him without being able to focus on
an identifiable organization sharing his thoughts and ideas. This
can make one lonely, indeed.
     But there is no need for loneliness. There are more potential
survivalists around than you think. In fact, just about everyone
with any sense shares your fears, but has not as yet seen a reason
for optimism in the face of increasing adversity. This optimism is
what sets off the survivalist from the non-survivalist.
     Let me first explain to you that you are not alone in your
anxieties about the future. I will also point out why your scoffing
neighbor is even more afraid of the future than you are. I'll
describe him in an analogy which will let you know how afraid he is
and why he finds a kind of refuge in scoffing at your preparations.
     Let's say that your neighbor bought a plot of land and built
his dream home on it. When it was finished he believed his security
was assured. Then he went to get it insured.
     The insurance agent looked at a geodesic survey map of that
area and found the house to have been built on a major earthquake
fault. No insurance. No fire insurance, lest a tremor break a gas
main or cause an electrical short and cause a fire. Anything that
might happen to the house, except something like a burglary, could
be blamed on a tremor. The agent went on to explain that the area
is due for a quake any time. Maybe in a month, a year, three years
at most, since geologists have kept records of periodic quakes in
that area.
     So what does your neighbor do? He has sunk all he has in that
doomed home. He can't afford a new plot or the price of moving the
house to it. he can't sell it since anyone with the price would
also have the sense to ask why it wasn't insured.
     If he were a survivalist, he would sell the house and fixtures
to a salvage company or to a party who had another plot of land and
the money to afford moving it, either at a terrible loss. Then he
would take what little he had, move to a safer place and build a
shack. But he is not a survivalist so he rationalizes that a quake
will not hit in his lifetime. He develops an ulcer, takes up
bedwetting, gets a prescription for valium and says, "This is the
best of all possible worlds."
     Don't you realize by now that the average person who has given
you the horse-laugh has built his house on an earthquake fault? How
many of those scoffers have everything they own, their lifestyles,
their jobs, sunk in this floundering system?
     They know what's going on. They watch TV the same as you, read
the same headlines, pay the same inflated prices for food and
everything else. They just lack the guts to get out of the trap,
even if, like an animal, they may have to chew a leg off to get
free. Can you blame them for looking for pie in the sky, rather
than sacrificing all they now hold dear to survive the coming crash?
     Of course, I've pointed out in previous editorials that the
change need not be so radical. But too many non-survivalists seem
to believe that facing the whole picture would be too frightening
and find it easier to hope for relief from sources outside
themselves.
     My northeastern subscribers know many who had to dig their
cars out of record snows. The changing weather patterns have wiped
out the properties of hundreds of thousands of families in America.
Even Carla Emery's entire farm was washed out of existence by a
recent flood. But Carla toughed it out and is on her way back. How
many thousands are still living in government supplied trailer homes?
     Everyone knows that the surplus population, the increasing
government and technological incompetence, Moslem fanaticism in the
Middle East, communist crap-stirring worldwide, etc., is bringing
world civilization down. They know this, but refuse to admit its
application to their own futures. Any guy you meet in a bar, after
a few beers, will say the world is going to hell in a handbasket.
But the next day, he'll go on whistling in the dark, as usual.
     The only difference between a non-survivalist and you, is that
the non-survivalist lacks the confidence to prepare. He will scoff,
rationalize, call you paranoid and then fall on his knees before
the TV evangelist and ask Jesus to save him.
     Barring that, he might join a political extremist group and
set out to save the world by bombing a politician's flower box. He
might lose himself in drink or drugs. In his anxiety and
frustration he might batter his child. He may go into a mom and pop
store, shooting the old couple and taking $50.00 from the register.
He may turn to mugging. Losing himself in degeneracy, he might try
to crash the Guiness Book of Records by scoring the most rapes in
his area. You'll also find him in a leather club, beating or being
beaten. He may sexually abuse children. The fag bars are also
filled with people who say you're full of baloney. These are the
self-doomed, the damned and the undisciplined. They know the end is
near for their kind and before they go, they're going to indulge in
every primeval, infantile fantasy they've ever entertained.
     In short, the people of this planet are going mad through
anxiety over situations they can't cope with. Oh, you're not alone
in your anxieties. Your special kind of aloneness simply manifests
itself in facing reality, while those around you are going
collectively mad.
     A bit of Black Humor I like is the idea that the only one who
keeps his head while those around him are losing theirs is the one
operating the Guillotine. You've got to be in control. You've got
to approach everyone worthy within your sphere and tell them they
can ride this out.
     Don't preach at them or argue. If they can't handle the
situation, you're wasting time best spent on someone else. Instead
of making a debate of the issue, show them that you have a plan
which helps you to face the same problems inflicting them. Compare
your respective situations and show them they are not alone and
there are answers.
     I remember joining the John Birch Society in 1964. They would
create chapters made up of citizens who met in the members' homes
regularly. There they would discuss many of the problems which have
since grown into major concerns today. They talked over coffee and
made it like a cordial little party.
     The only thing wrong with them was they blamed all the
approaching troubles on the communists, especially the Russians. It
seemed that every bit of international and domestic skulduggery,
all economic woes and even teenage acne were caused by the
Russians. (I still get bulletins from various alert patriots
explaining how the Russians are behind the bad weather, even though
Moscow is being mobbed by peasants coming in from the countryside
for meat. Russia's weather has been worse than ours, causing major
crop losses. Dumb Russians for ruining the world's weather and
thereby starving their own people).
     The Birchers finally went out of business; at least, I haven't
heard of them for years. They told what was wrong, and quite well.
But they offered no solutions except to write letters of complaint.
Also, they blamed the communists for everything and our own system
for nothing.
     Even so, their ideas of local chapters where concerned
citizens could get together was good. Survivalist chapters might be
the answer to the need for community preparation for harder times
ahead.
     If you would like to start a survival chapter in your area,
I'll give you a few pointers on how to get started. First, put a
classified ad in your local newspaper. Such ads cost very little.
Put it in the "Personals" column and keep it running until you have
the group you need. You might word it like this; "Survival Seminar.
If you are worried about inflation, government bungling, job
security, the decline of the world's systems, etc., call --------".
     Of course, before putting in such an ad, you must have a home
suitable for such meetings. The Birch meetings I attended were in
middle-class homes with plenty of couches and easy chairs. The
refreshments were coffee, cake and cookies and general goodies
served guests dropping in for a little talk. Nothing fancy.
     When people call up to enquire you can tell them it's just a
non-political get-together to discuss individual and group
preparation to make it through the worsening conditions facing the
community. The discussions will deal with saving money on foods,
starting home businesses, storing commodities soon to be in short
supply, etc.
     If they seem interested, tell them your address and the
evening of the meeting; Fridays are best. If a caller begins to
argue and tell you everything is fine, you're talking to a boob who
is so locked into the system he can't consider an alternative. He
called because he's afraid and hoped you were some sort of phoney
who would reinforce his hopes that his fears were unfounded. He's
too far gone. Tell him politely that he must have had something
else in mind and wouldn't enjoy the group and then hang up.
     The ones who have the guts to act will be receptive. They are
the ones you can count on for a good discussion. They may not
accept all your ideas, nor you theirs. But such discussions will
consolidate the worries your visitors have in common. Then you and
they will learn to think concerning those survival issues
confronting those in your area.
     You wouldn't need to begin your first meeting with the rougher
aspects of survival. You could emphasize the logic of learning
alternative trades, dozens of which are in the four volumes of THE
SURVIVOR. Not one of the visitors could reject them all.
     You might also emphasize buying in volume or even creating a
food cooperative. The way this works is for everyone to list what
they regularly buy. Then you could arrange for a visit to your
nearest food wholesaler. Upon getting the wholesale prices for all
the week's order, you could collect each member's share for what he
will take. That way, the group would get all their food at
wholesale rates. There are thousands of such community food
cooperatives around the country and that's the best way to start a
survival group.
     You could also broach the idea of buying commodities by the
case or the gross to resell or barter later. About three years ago,
Johnny Carson jokingly predicted a shortage of toilet paper. There
was nothing to it but a lot of people took him seriously.
     One old lady panicked and bought 1000 cases of toilet paper.
It finally dawned on her that there was no shortage. However, she
had the cases stored in an outbuilding. A few months ago she
decided to sell them back to the wholesaler. She got back over
twice what she originally paid.
     This system would work with anything and is far more sensible
than putting money into a savings account. A member might buy 100
cases of 50 book cartons of matches. Another might buy several
gross of packets of sewing needles and spools of thread. Razor
blades, safety pins, office supplies such as ball point pens,
pencils, erasers, etc., would be relatively cheap by the gross and
would rise in value over the months ahead.
     You can get such commodities wholesale from jobbers listed in
your phone book or even from your local stores. The store owner
would be glad to knock off 10% on cases of canned goods and such.
And if you use the product regularly, you can be sure the price
will have risen by the time you had used half the case.
     The above money-saving ideas would immediately interest a
general survival group and make them more receptive to your ideas
on the harsher aspects. To get them to accept the harder stuff, you
could sell survival books to the members. For instance, you can buy
30 of my books in any selection for half price. You could resell
them to group members and make a profit or just enough over to pay for
refreshments. You could work the same arrangement with other
survival book publishers and your members would assemble fine
survival libraries and think more your way as the weeks went by.
     In a short time, you'd have a gung-ho survival group, the kind
of which so many of you have been wanting. Not only will you have a
fine survival group, but in helping others to think survival, you'd
be getting your own thinking squared away. You and your group would
then be the most stable force in the community when the crash
finally comes.

Efficient Fire-wood Harvesting

WANT a good supply of quality firewood with low cash expenditure?
Want more time to get other homestead chores done? Want some good
exercise, but not endless hours of backbreaking work? Care about
the area you're going to harvest and don't want to scar it up
with heavy equipment?

   You can accomplish all of these aims in one stroke - if you
know the "magic word". That word? Efficiency!

   A firewood harvesting foray can yield a far greater amount of
product than would normally be expected in the same amount of
time when you use efficient planning, preparation and execution.

There is really no problem in locating stands or areas of poten
tial firewood. They are usually too small to warrant commercial
attention or too difficult to reach without heavy equipment.
Perfect for you to obtain, for no cash cost and perhaps only an
exchange of "logging rights", a small share of the wood. For this
reason I wont go into where to find wood.

I have a 15-acre homestead abutting a 47-acre lot. My neighbor,
who has just built a log home on the front of that lot, allowed
beavers to set up housekeeping about 3 years ago. The pond they
created effectively cut access to the back 80 percent of the lot,
making it impossible for her to cut firewood without crossing my
property, and even then only with a great deal of difficulty
because of the terrain.

The beavers, on the other hand, had no trouble reaching and
cutting trees at all. Given the taste beavers have for the better
quality trees, it was not long before an amazing abundance of
large oaks, birches, poplar and beech trees lay in disarray in
the area. Even more trees stood, dead, from having been girdled
by the beavers or drowned by the rising water.

We both wanted the estimated 10 to 12 cord of wood that could be
extracted from the area, but we also know the devastation loggers
would cause if we had them do it. And, of course, it would not be
cheap. Therefore, we settled on a simple exchange of part of the
harvest for her if I could get it out.

With the aforementioned in mind, I hasten to add that this
article is not a review of proper safety procedures for wood
cutting. Anyone planning to do any work with a chain saw, power
splitter or any hand tool such as an axe or buck saw should be
completely knowledgeable in the safe use and operation of these
tools. Extensive instruction and safety tips are included with
any power or hand tool you purchase. I can give you no better
advice than to tell you to study and understand the instructions
for any equipment you intend to use.

However, I will make these few points. By our very nature those
of us who seek the more self-sufficient way of life, often tend
to work alone. Sometimes because we want to and other times
because we have to. While it is never a good idea to work in the
woods alone, especially with power tools, if you decide to, then
I strongly suggest you do the following:

- If there is any chance of having someone around for a period
of time get as much power tool work done as possible, especially
chain saw work.

- Have a first aid kit with you. Even a simple one with com
press bandages can save your life.

- Have a CB radio, whistle or "fog horn" (the kind carried on
small boats and powered by a can of compressed air) as a means of
signaling for help.

- Last, but not least, THINK SAFETY AT ALL TIMES.

Frugal is a word we do not hear much these days, but its meaning
is not lost on homesteaders. Keep it in mind as you choose your
tools for the task. When it come to large items, such as a chain
saw, borrow it if you do not need it for more than this one task.
You can easily be sold a lot of expensive doodads and "need-to-
have" stuff that you can really do without. Some of it can be
very expensive, such as a wood splitter; nice to look at and does
a fast job, but considerable money to spend for two or three
day's worth of work, only to be stored for the rest of the year.

You can do a reasonably fast and "effort acceptable" job with
only these items: safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, small
hatchet or machete, splitting wedge, maul, chain saw with acces
sories, and a "measuring stick." you can quickly and easily make
yourself a measuring stick. It will save you time and maybe some
aggravation.

Cut a pole about four feet long and about an inch or so in
diameter and clean it up by taking all the branches and bark off.
Then decide how long your split wood has to be to fit your stove,
its "stove length".

For example, my stove takes 24 inch logs so I cut my logs to 20
inches... just to make sure they fit. I marked off my stick at 20
inches and 40 inches, making sure the handle end was indicated.
Use bright yellow or orange paint or tape for this. Using this
stick, you can quickly measure off multiples of correct stove
lengths and mark them on the logs with your hatchet.

When To Cut - Pick your season for wood cutting. In my area,
southern New Hampshire, the best times of year are mid-to-late
spring and mid-to-late autumn. During these times of the year the
weather may still be unpredictable, but usually it's good. In the
spring, the leaves and fast growing ferns and grasses have not
yet sprung up to make work difficult. In the fall, especially
after the first good frost, grasses and ferns have died back and
many leaves are off the trees. But, best of all, there are almost
no insects around!

By the time one of these two seasons rolls around, you should
have already accomplished the next step - reconnaissance

Whether the areas you will "log" is on or near your property or
further away, this is a step that is most important. By choosing
the area in the first place, you have already decided that it is
worth the time and effort to travel the distance involved to get
the wood.

On your reconnaissance you should make the following notes:

- How far from your transportation do you want to walk to a
logging area?

- In that area, how much "dry" wood is available (including cut
and left by loggers, standing dead or hangers)?

- How much green wood is there?

Make a sketch of where and how you will set up your work site,
Mark the various stations. Setting up the work site is next. You
may elect to do it days before you start to cut or do it first
day of cutting. The important thing to remember is that next to
safety, efficiency is most important; so take the time to set up

The logging area and the work site are set up so that wood
flows in one direction and is handled as few times as possible.
Clear your work sits of grass, ferns, loose stones, and dead wood
that is in the way. The same is true for your walkways in the
work site and throughout the logging area. You will be carrying
some good sized logs and the painful consequences of tripping
over something will be greatly increased with the weight of a log
in your arms or on your shoulder. Pay particular attention to
special dangers.

Closest to the transport should be the splitting area. When the
wood is split, it can be tossed directly into the transport. This
is also the best place to leave items such as fuel, tools, bar
oil, lunch and refreshments. A note here: alcoholic beverages of
any kind have no place when you are doing this type of work.

Next to the splitting area, set up two "bucking stands". Both
stands serve the same purpose: to produce multiple stove length
pieces in a single cut and thus making the most efficient use of
time and energy.

Though each stand is made differently, there is one thing about
their construction they have in common that is very important.
The width of the stands MUST be a few inches shorter than the
length of the bar on your chain saw.

If this width is greater than the bar length, the saw will
"tip" on the log farthest out and cause the saw to kick back at
you. Both stands are used at the same time. The pre-built one
holds smaller logs or branches, and you can put as many in as the
stand will hold. However, with the field-built stand relative
diameters are important. Putting a much smaller log on the out
side, or farthest from you, with a larger log closer is not safe,
because the chain of the saw can pull the smaller one over the
larger one, hitting you quite hard. Basically, use the pre-built
stand for logs and branches less than 4 inches and the field-
built one for over 4 inches in diameter.

On the opposite side of the splitting area, find a space for
"uglies." Uglies are what I call short leftovers and pieces too
hard to split, such as knots and forks. As I measure up logs for
cutting, I usually cut around these and leave them behind. This
way, when it is time to split, I do not have a fight on my hands.
I save the uglies to burn during the day when I can tend the
fire... "Waste knot, want knot."

The last areas to set up are the stacking areas. This is noth
ing more than a cleared area. As you bring your wood in, you fill
the bucking stands first, then stack up the rest. Now you are
ready to start. You arrive early on a nice sunny day and are
ready to go. Stop! Take time to finish your coffee Now is the
time to answer the most important question of the day: "How much
can I really get done in the time I have set aside?" Your goal
should be to get everything you cut home at the end of the time
you have

Now you are ready to start cutting. Cut the trees in the fol
lowing order:

- Downed trees, green and dead.
- Hangers and leaners (be careful).
- Standing dead trees.
- Standing green trees.

Work from a point closest to your work site outward to the
farthest point you will want to go. Do all the like work at once.
Cut down trees. Limb all the trees. Mark off all the trees in
stove lengths with the help of your measuring stick. Cut all the
logs to carrying length.

If you can lift 100 pounds, do not try to carry logs any heavier
than about 50 pounds. Not only will you get tired faster trying
to carry your best load and risk a lifting injury, but the chance
of a serious injury is much greater if you fall with 100 pounds
on your shoulder.

When cutting the logs, cut in multiples of the stove length
marks you made. The shortest log will be one of one stove length.
If this is still too heavy, you will have to split it in half. As
you work up the trunk of the tree, the diameter will get smaller
and you will be able to carry logs of two and then three stove
lengths.

The maximum length you should carry is not more than about 8
feet. Beyond this length, they became very clumsy to handle and
difficult to walk with through the woods. When you get to diame
ters of about 4 inches and less there is no need to mark them.
Your 2 x 4 bucking stand will do that for you.

Splitting - Once all the cutting is done, the next chore is to
get them to the work site. Just as with the other work, there is
a best order to work in:

- The heaviest and farthest away.
- The farthest away for like sizes.
- The uglies.

By working from the farthest point with the heaviest ones first,
you achieve several goals. First, the heaviest are most likely to
be the single stove lengths and these can go straight to the
splitting area. They will be out of your way from the logging
area first and ready to be split at the work site first. More
important, you will move the heaviest the farthest when you are
still rested and strongest. As the day goes on you will begin to
tire, but the difficulty of the work will lessen with the de
crease in your energy level... a definite psychological advan
tage. Last to be brought in and loaded are the uglies. They are
the smallest and represent the least valuable of the wood. If
some one shows up to help, like the children after school, these
small pieces will be easy for them to handle and give them some
thing useful to do. However, should time run short, you can
always leave the uglies behind.

Now, all the work will be done in the work site. What you have
accomplished so far should have taken about 2/3 of the time you
have to complete the task.

Continuing the theory of getting the most energy consuming
tasks finished first, the next step is to split the stove length
logs, and load them as you split. Use the field-build stand to
cut the multiple length logs and split and load them. Lastly, cut
the smallest diameter logs in the 2 x 4 stand. Each cut here will
give you armloads of smaller diameter lengths that will not need
splitting. Once these are loaded, just throw on the uglies.

Before you leave though, you may want to consider one of those
nice, straight, tall, but very dead pines. Cut into rounds about
a foot long, they split very nicely into kindling. Load your
tools and any trash in the area... even if it is not yours.

You have gotten your wood home in the time you set aside. Done?
Not yet! Follow through on the last task storage.

You went through a lot of trouble and work to get this wood so
take care of it until you use it. There are many methods of
storing wood, but keep these characteristics in mind as you plan
to store:

- Try to store it out of the weather.
- Separate the green from the seasoned and the bone dry.
- Don't store it too far from the house... remember, you have to
      get to it in the dead of winter.

Use the bone dry early in the season. It will burn faster, but
chances are you will need it mostly for getting "the chill out"
more than serious heating. Stone the green wood in ricks one
stove length wide, about four feet high as long as you like. Run
the ricks east and west. Wrap the sides and ends in clear or
black plastic, but not the top.

Put scrap boards or plywood on top, held down by rocks or logs.
On sunny, winter days the plastic will cause a greenhouse effect
and help dry the wood. The moisture will be able to escape
through the top. By early spring it should be ready to use.

Now you can sit back and have that cup of herbal tea or dip
into that cider barrel.

You have efficiently, at little cash expense, brought yourself
closer to self sufficiency using what others did not want. You
have not harmed the environment in the process, and have gotten a
good physical workout that others pay big money for at a spa. Not
bad for a day's work! Be proud of yourself and sleep well to
night.

SKIN, which covers our body, has the important function of pro
tecting the internal organs and tissues from the environment and
physical objects. Technically, this protective covering is also
our largest body organ and the first line of defense from in
juries and bacteria. With injury, the outer layer of skin, the
epidermis, is either scraped away or opened-up to permit bacteria
and materials to enter. In a more severe wound, the next layer
downward, the dermis is penetrated. This contains connective
tissue, sweat glands, hair follicles, nerves, lymph and blood
vessels. Generally speaking, the deeper the wound, the more
serious the consequences it can have for the body.

As survivalists, you want to be prepared for about anything at
any time. Therefore, the best approach to a presentation on wound
care is to cover everything from the simple closed wound to more
serious injuries. In these, the skin has been compromised and the
wound is therefore referred to as open.

CLOSED WOUND TO THE SKIN: This is the common BRUISE or CONTUSION
which is caused by a blunt object impacting upon the body. The
result is that blood will begin to leak from the injured vessel
under the skin which then causes that area to change color to a
black or blue. The good thing with this injury is that because
the skin has not been broken, infection is not a great possibili
ty. Therefore, the immediate first aid treatment is to apply ice
for about 10 minutes and then throughout the day. Even though the
skin was not broken, this could still be a serious problem, one
depending on what was injured beneath the skin and the amount of
force that originally caused the injury. If an internal organ in
the abdominal area was severely injured, bleeding could be taking
place internally without evidence externally. When traveling or
hunting with horses, an injury could happen by simply stopping to
adjust a load on a pack horse. If he gets spooked and you kicked,
an internal injury could result. A hard kick to the abdomen when
days from medical care could cause internal bleeding that may be
fatal. Not all is obvious at all times!

OPEN WOUNDS TO THE SKIN: It is in this category where everything
from a band-aid to sutures are necessary along with special
considerations and concerns. In beginning with the least serious
of six major categories of open wounds, we have the ABRASION.
This is where the outer surface of skin has been scraped away as
from a scratch or rope burn. There is usually some minor oozing
of blood and serum.

Depending on how the injury was obtained, there is usually dirt
or foreign matter ground into it. This problem brings to light
another player against wound healing, infection. The treatment
now goes beyond the application of ice. To treat an abrasion as a
scraped knee, the wound must first be cleansed with soap, water
and if available, hydrogen peroxide. This will remove dirt that
will cause an infection and therefore impair healing.

Once cleaned, the wound should be blotted dry with a clean cloth
or preferably a sterile gauze. It now would also be a good idea
to apply pressure over the injured site for a few minutes for the
purpose of slowing down and hopefully stopping any bleeding. The
application of a first aid or antibiotic cream to the abrasion
could help to prevent infection and keep the bandage that you
will apply from sticking to the raw wound. For the best protec
tion, the bandage should cover an inch beyond the wound. An ice
pack over the final bandage can serve to reduce swelling and some
of the discomfort. The next category of wounds is the INCISION.
This is made from a sharp knife-like object that leaves a clean
cut. To keep this one separated from the next, think of a surgi
cal incision where the cut edges are smooth.

The third is the LACERATION which is similar but with jagged
edges due to a tear. Because these go beyond the outer layer of
skin and into the deeper layers that contain blood vessels, there
is a lot of bleeding. If you were deep enough or unlucky enough
to cut an artery, blood will squirt out with each heart beat due
to the high pressure in these vessels. The best approach here is
to apply a pressure dressing and get to medical care where su
tures will usually be needed to fully or partially close the
wound, depending on if it was dirty or clean. Because suturing is
a common medical procedure, I will later outline some information
on what is involved to better inform you of your doctor's op
tions.

The next wound is the PUNCTURE. As its name implies, this is
when a foreign object is pushed into the skin. This could be a
splinter that only penetrates the superficial layers of skin or a
nail, sharp stick or fishing hook that penetrates deeper. With
this you usually will not see much external blood which does not
mean that there is little internal bleeding. To treat something
such as a puncture wound to the foot from a nail, all you can do
is to put ice on it along with a pressure wrapping and get to
medical care. This is critical since if you are not already
protected against tetanus, you will need to get an injection for
such protection. If you are in the outdoors a lot, it pays to
keep your immunizations updated.

The next skin wound is the AVULSION. This is where skin is
pulled or torn off. As with an AMPUTATION, the severed tissue
should be saved and taken with you to the hospital. If a finger,
a pressure dressing over the stump or if skin, again a pressure
dressing over the wound is about all one can do until medical
facilities are reached. One other point should be addressed
concerning "serious wound" dressings. That is, once a dressing is
applied, leave it alone and do not take it off every 20 minutes
to check the wound. If unnecessarily disturbed, all you will be
doing is to undo the positive measures already applied.

WOUND MANAGEMENT SUMMARY: The first concern with any wound is to
control bleeding. On the first aid level, this usually means
through the use of a pressure bandage. The next concern is to
prevent wound contamination which refers to cleaning the wound
and applying a sterile bandage and possibly an antibiotic oint
ment. Lastly, immobilization of the inured part along with rest
and if severe, medical intervention, are all wise procedures.

The Mystery Of Sutures - Many of us while growing up had to be
sewn back together. My father, a small town GP who did it all put
six in my leg and another six or seven in my chin all before the
age of 12. If you were like me, you just wanted to get it over
with and therefore could not have cared about details. In the
following, I will give a general summary of what suturing encom
passes. Hopefully, this will help to lift some of that curtain of
mystery concerning this common procedure.

THE SUTURE ITSELF: The thread like material attached to a
curved needle or used on a straight one is absorbable and used
internally or nonabsorbable and used internally and externally as
in holding skin together. Some of the materials used in the
non-absorbables and that which we are concerned with are made
from silk, cotton, nylon, dermal and stainless steel. One of the
reasons for all of the different materials concerns tissue reac
tion to something foreign to the body even though it is serving a
purpose. All the body knows is that there is a foreign substance
within it that was not there before. The body can then react
against this invader and you will get a tissue reaction. The
reason stainless steel is popular in surgery by some surgeons is
that of all the suture materials, it evokes the least tissue
reaction.

Suture size is also important since different materials and
weights of thread are matched to the task and tissue. Generally
speaking, suture material should not be stronger than the tissues
it is expected to hold together. Of all the sutures, those of
silk or nylon are most widely used in holding skin together. The
size is designated as 2-0 or 00, 3-0 or 000, etc. The smaller the
number, the stronger the material. To hold skin together, a 000
or 0000 is generally used. Needles attached to the thread can
either be straight or curved with those curved most commonly used
in your doctor's office. With ones curved, a needle holder or
hemostat is required to use it.

A friend of mine who is an orthopedic surgeon told me that he
would recommend a straight needle for use in the outdoors to
close the skin since a needle holder is not needed. When using a
continuous suture with a straight needle, this would be the
quickest way to close a skin wound. If you are heading into
remote areas and feel that you would like to know how to do this,
I would recommend that you ask your family doctor for advice
since he best knows you and would be the one to advise you on
this. Yet, for most lacerations, a pressure dressing over the
wound would be the preferred procedure until medical care would
be available.

Another consideration your doctor will have to be careful about
is that after skin has been sutured back together, edema or
swelling of the tissues usually enters into the picture. If the
suture was originally tight, with swelling, it will soon be too
tight. Therefore, proper tension the first time the job was done
is critical to good healing.

The purpose of suturing is to pull the tissue together just
enough so that there will be no dead spaces below the skin where
blood and fluid can accumulate. If there is, it will eventually
be a breeding ground for an infection. In staying with how su
tures are put in, it is also important that the same amount of
tissue be included on each side of the suture. If the suture
includes more tissue on one side than the other and/or the needle
is inserted deeper on one side than the other, when tied togeth
er, the skin edges can overlap causing poor wound healing and/or
a scar. All your doctor wants to do is to put the severed edges
back like they were before the accident so that the body can
complete the job of healing.

Because a medical emergency as a laceration can happen anywhere
with the worst place being when medical care is not readily
available, I would highly recommend a Red Cross first aid course.
Once this is completed, I would then recommend that you take
advanced courses and hopefully get certified as an Emergency
Medical Technician. Also, if you go on outfitted back country
hunts, one of the questions you should ask of the outfitter/guide
is if he or she is certified in first aid. In the event that your
guide would get inured, it would also be to everyone's advantage
if you were qualified to help him.

A rule of good medicine is to do no harm to your patient.
Therefore, take a first aid course and learn how to help yourself
and if the situation presents itself someone else.

    Dental Emergencies

TOM and Sylvia Moore and their two boys, Tom Jr., age twelve
and Jed, age ten, hiked all day and near dusk made camp on a
lovely grassy knoll overlooking a high mountain stream loaded
with trout, apparently begging to be tossed in their frying pan.

    At daybreak, Tom and Sylvia were awakened by Tom Jr.    and
Jed jumping up and down outside their tent yelling for them to
get up and take them down to the stream.   The boys had their
four rods rigged by the time their parents had dressed.    Tom
understood their excitement knowing how much the whole family had
been looking forward to this vacation.

     As they started out, the two grownups found the kids' feel
ings contagious.     Halfway down the trail, Jed, who had been
running ahead, suddenly let out a cry of pain.   When the family
rushed up, they found the boy lying on the ground holding his
jaw.    Tom picked him up and sat him on a flat rock.    Blood
gushed out of his mouth.   Pulling the boy's hand away, Tom saw a
gapping hole where Jed's front tooth should have been.   The boy
held up a bloody tooth.   Tom saw where the boy fell and the
bloody rock where he must have hit his jaw and realized he had
knocked the front tooth cleanly out of its socket.

Luckily Sylvia had once worked in a dental office.   She gently
took the tooth from the boy being careful to hold it by the
crown.    Leading the boy back to camp, she sat him in a camp
chair while she got out her emergency first aid kit.   Laying the
tooth on a clean piece of gauze, she washed the blood from the
boy's mouth and inspected the tooth's socket.   A small amount of
blood was still oozing out.   She had the boy rinse with plain
water cautioning him not to suck or use any force.    She then
rinsed what dirt she could from the surface of the root, being
careful not to touch the root with her fingers.   Still holding
the tooth by the crown, she tenderly inserted it in the tooth
socket, holding it firmly in place while her husband, using a
piece of heavy monofilament fishing line splinted the tooth to
the two adjoining teeth.   She made a cold pack with water from
the icy stream which she had the boy hold against his face next
to the injured area to minimize swelling.

Leaving Tom Jr.   and Sylvia at camp, Tom took the boy down the
mountain to a hospital emergency room where they got in touch
with a dentist who gave the boy more permanent treatment.    He
told Tom due to their quick action in replacing the tooth and
bringing him in for professional help, they had an excellent
chance the tooth would be permanently attached though he would
have to check the tooth's pulp from time to time to make sure it
was alive.    If it died, he would fill the canal and the boy
could still retain his tooth for many years.

Often when taking a vacation away from home, we are prepared
for general health problems but do not know what to do when faced
with a dental emergency.   Whether the trouble faced is a simple
toothache, pain from tooth eruption or something more serious
like a broken jaw or a abscessed tooth, it may threaten to spoil
a vacation.

Before leaving on a trip, it is good insurance to see a dentist
in order to make sure there will be no dental problems which may
give trouble in the near term.   It is smart to add a dental
first aid emergency kit to your luggage.

This should include:
1.   Medications such as, salt, hydrogen peroxide (3%), aspirin
or acetaminaphen (Tylenol), oil of cloves and orabase with benzo
caine, (like Orabase Oral Protective Paste with Benzocaine on
sale at your local pharmacy).
2.    Supplies should include: cotton   balls, cotton swabs,
gauze pads, tea bags, a toothbrush, dental floss, toothpicks,
tweezers, some paraffin or candle wax and an ice pack or a wet
frozen wash cloth.

   TOOTHACHE: The most common dental emergency.   This generally
means a badly decayed tooth.   As the pain affects the tooth's
nerve, treatment involves gently removing any debris lodged in
the cavity being careful not to poke deep as this will cause
severe pain if the nerve is touched.   Next rinse vigorously with
warm water.    Then soak a small piece of cotton in oil of cloves
and insert it in the cavity.   This will give temporary relief
until a dentist can be reached.

   At times the pain may have a more obscure location such as
decay under an old filling.   As this can be only corrected by a
dentist there are two things you can do to help the pain.
Administer a pain pill (aspirin or some other analgesic) inter
nally or dissolve a tablet in a half glass (4 oz) of warm water
holding it in the mouth for several minutes before spitting it
out.     DO NOT PLACE A WHOLE TABLET OR ANY PART OF IT IN THE
TOOTH OR AGAINST THE SOFT GUM TISSUE AS IT WILL RESULT IN A NASTY
BURN.

    SWOLLEN JAW: This may be caused by several conditions the
most probable being an abscessed tooth.   In any case the treat
ment should be to reduce pain and swelling.   An ice pack held on
the outside of the jaw, (ten minutes on and ten minutes off) will
take care of both.   If this does not control the pain, an anal
gesic tablet can be given every four hours.

   OTHER ORAL INJURIES: Broken teeth, cut lips, bitten tongue or
lips if severe means a trip to a dentist as soon as possible.
In the mean time rinse the mouth with warm water and place cold
compresses on the face opposite the injury.   If there is a lot
of bleeding, apply direct pressure to the bleeding area.    If
bleeding does not stop get patient to the emergency room of a
hospital as stitches may be necessary.

PROLONGED BLEEDING FOLLOWING AN EXTRACTION: Place a gauze pad or
better still a moistened tea bag over the socket and have the
patient bite down gently on it for 30to 45 minutes.   The tannic
acid in the tea seeps into the tissues and often helps stop the
bleeding.    If bleeding continues after two hours, call the
dentist or take patient to the emergency room of the nearest
hospital.

BROKEN JAW: If you suspect the patient's jaw is broken, bring
the upper and lower teeth together.   Put a necktie, handkerchief
or towel under the chin, tying it over the head to immobilize the
jaw until you can get the patient to a dentist or the emergency
room of a hospital.

PAINFUL ERUPTING TOOTH: In young children teething pain can come
from a loose baby tooth or from an erupting permanent tooth.
Some relief can be given by crushing a little ice and wrapping it
in gauze or a clean piece of cloth and putting it directly on the
tooth or gum tissue where it hurts.   The numbing effect of the
cold,along with an appropriate dose of aspirin, usually provides
temporary relief.

In young adults, an erupting 3rd molar (Wisdom tooth), especial
ly if it is impacted, can cause the jaw to swell and be quite
painful.    Often the gum around the tooth will show signs of
infection.    Temporary relief can be had by giving aspirin or
some other painkiller and by dissolving an aspirin in half a
glass of warm water and holding this solution in the mouth over
the sore gum.   AGAIN DO NOT PLACE A TABLET DIRECTLY OVER THE GUM
OR CHEEK OR USE THE ASPIRIN SOLUTION ANY STRONGER THAN RECOMMEND
ED TO PREVENT BURNING THE TISSUE.   The swelling of the jaw can
be reduced by using an ice pack on the outside of the face (At
intervals of ten minutes on and ten minutes off.

COLD SORES, CANKER SORES AND FEVER BLISTERS: Sores in the mouth,
lips or tongue can be caused by many reasons, irritation, in
juries which bruise or cut the lip or just a run-down condition.
The germs which cause most of these sores are always laying just
below the surface waiting for a chance to flare up.    Usually
these lesions last five days no matter what you put on them.
Such preparations as Blistex, Carmex, Butyn Dental Ointment or
Spirits of Camphor will relieve pain but it is doubtful whether
they cause them to heal any sooner. New studies suggest that
high levels of another amino acid, arginine can give the body in
creased resistance to these painful mouth and lip sores.

Generally, when confronted by a dental emergency, you can only
relieve the pain and give temporary treatment until the patient
can see their dentist.    Sometimes, as was the case in Tom and
Sylvia's family, fast prompt emergency treatment can spell the
difference between permanently losing a tooth and saving it.

Good Cheap Food

1. Buy raw ingredients instead of prepackaged foods. If you don’t know how to cook, learn. You’ll save on food bills, and your body will thank you for it in the long run.
2. Buy in bulk from a local health food store, or place bulk orders directly with mail-order companies. If you can’t meet their minimum order size, go in on an order with another family, or organize a larger food buying club.
3. Avoid the middleman and buy directly from farmers. Look for farm stands, community supported agriculture programs and farmers markets.
4. Eat fruits and vegetables in season, when they are least expensive. (Once, we found organic watermelon for three cents a pound!) Stock up when they’re cheap and freeze or can any excess for later use.
5. Keep up with what’s in your refrigerator and make sure nothing spoils. Once a week, make soup or casseroles to use up vegetables and other leftovers.
6. Calculate the price of food per pound when you visit supermarkets. Doing the math will help you spot good deals.

Keep Home Upkeep costs Down

7. Close off unused rooms to save on heat and air conditioning.
8. Be efficient with your appliances. Have a big baking night when you’re going to use the oven. Let your woodstove also be your dryer and water heater.
9. Take advantage of natural weather patterns to heat and cool your house. In the summer, open the windows at night and close them again by noon.
10. Place your refrigerator in the coldest part of the house so it requires less energy to keep the temperature low.
11. Wash your clothes in cold water. It’s the friction that does most of the cleaning, not the heat.
12. Switch off your water heater when you’re not going to use it for extended periods of time.
13. Buy energy-efficient light bulbs. The savings on your electric bills add up fast.

When You Can’t Avoid Shopping

14. Don’t go into stores unless you need something. Always carry a shopping list. Remember, stores are designed to get you to buy things you didn’t know you needed.
15. Hit end-of-season sales for as many items as possible, from kayaks to gardening supplies.
16. Before you shop, try borrowing the items you need from family or friends. Check out local Freecycle groups to find out what people are giving away. Set up borrowing co-ops for tools.
17. Try to find it used before you buy new. You can find a wide variety of items online, in the classifieds or penny papers, and at garage sales, estate sales and thrift stores.
18. When buying new, choose high-quality, durable items. It’s often cheaper to spend more upfront if you won’t have to replace the item in the near future.

Get Some Clothes On!

19. Buy clothing used whenever possible. You may have good luck finding clothes at garage sales, or find a wider selection at thrift stores, consignment shops and on eBay.
20. Have a clothing exchange party to trade unwanted clothing with friends.
21. Try sewing. Look for cheap material in thrift stores, or try reincarnating your outfits into something new.
22. Watch the clearance racks. It’s always amazing how much stores are willing to mark down unsold clothing.

23. Definitely choose used clothes for babies. They’re so cute, they don’t need to be stylish.
24. Trade babysitting time with other couples and have rotating playgroups with other families.
25. During the holidays, draw names for gift giving with groups of family or friends rather than buying a gift for everybody. A fun variation or addition to this is the white elephant holiday party, where everyone brings unwanted items and other joke gifts.
26. Invoke a gift giving spending cap.
27. Give homemade gift certificates for a home-cooked dinner, massage or babysitting time.
28. Donate to a good cause that a friend or family member supports instead of buying a gift they don’t need. Not only do you support a worthwhile organization, but you’ll save on sales tax and transportation costs.

Yes, most Americans realize that the economy is not doing well right now, but most of them also believe that this is just a “temporary” downturn. The mainstream media tells us over and over that a “recovery” has either already begun or that one is right around the corner.
Sadly, the truth is that the U.S. economy is in much worse shape than most Americans think. Yes, there will be economic “peaks and valleys” as we move along, but it is absolutely imperative that all of us understand that we are in the middle of a long-term economic decline that has been caused by decades of horrendous decisions. Thousands of businesses and millions of jobs have left the country and they aren’t coming back. Last year, 23 manufacturing facilities a day were shut down in the United States and we have lost more than 56,000 manufacturing facilities since 2001. Without enough good jobs to go around, millions of American families have lost their homes and millions of American families have been pushed into poverty. Less good jobs also means that there are less people to pay the taxes we need to keep government services going. Government debt at the local, state and federal levels has exploded as the tax base has dwindled. We have become a nation that is very good at consuming wealth but that is not very good at creating wealth. Just “tweaking” a couple of things here or there is not going to get our economy back “on track”. We need fundamental changes to the way that we are doing things, and there are currently no signs that this kind of change is going to happen any time soon.

But many Americans don’t even realize what is happening. As I wrote aboutrecently, Americans are increasingly being segregated by income. If you live in a “good neighborhood”, there is a decent chance that you might not know anyone that is having financial problems right now. If you live in a “bad neighborhood”, it might feel like you are living in the middle of the Great Depression.

We live such insulated lives today. We all get into our cars, go to work, get back into our cars, drive to the store, get back into our cars and drive home. For most of us, interactions with other human beings are fairly limited. Our perception of what is going on “in the real world” is greatly shaped by what the mainstream media tells us.

And the mainstream is constantly telling us that everything is going to be okay.

But is that the truth?

The following are 14 statistics which prove that the U.S. economy is in much worse shape than most Americans think….

#1 According to U.S. Representative Betty Sutton, America has lost an average of15 manufacturing facilities a day over the last 10 years.

#2 Sadly, it looks like this trend is picking up momentum. During 2010, an average of 23 manufacturing facilities a day closed down in the United States.

#3 Since 2001, the U.S. has lost a total of more than 56,000 manufacturing facilities.

#4 There are way too few jobs and this is leaving a lot of people out in the cold. The average amount of time that a worker stays unemployed in the United States is now a whopping 39 weeks.

#5 Only 48 percent of all unemployed Americans are currently getting unemployment checks from the government. Early last year, that number was at 75 percent.

#6 There doesn’t seem to be much hope that the job market will improve significantly any time soon. One recent survey found that 77 percent of all U.S. small businesses do not plans to hire any more workers.

#7 Without enough good jobs to go around, millions of Americans are losing their homes. Over the past four years, more than 100,000 homes in Las Vegas alone have been lost to foreclosure.

#8 As the economy struggles, new home sales continue to suffer as well. In fact, new home construction is poised to set a brand new all-time record low in 2011.

#9 As family budgets get tighter, Americans are saving less money and a significant percentage of them say that they have no extra money left to spend at this point. The savings rate in the United States in September was the lowest that it has been since December 2007, and according to one recent survey one-third of all Americans say that they have absolutely no spare cash to spend on anything right now.

#10 According to one recent survey, one out of every three Americans would not be able to make a mortgage or rent payment next month if they suddenly lost their current job.

#11 If you can believe it, extreme poverty is now at the highest level that the U.S. government has ever recorded. Today, more than one out of every seven Americans is living in poverty and more than 20 million of them are considered to be living in extreme poverty.

#12 State and local governments all over the country have gotten into massive debt problems. At this point, the municipal bond market in the United States is coming apart at the seams. The following is a brief excerpt from a recent articlethat appeared on biggovernment.com….

Moody’s Credit Rating Service just announced the ominous trend that credit quality in the municipal bond market is falling at the fastest rate since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. Data released showed that 5.3 times as many municipal bonds were credit downgraded over the three last months than were upgraded.

#13 Today, more Americans than ever are relying on the government in order to survive. A staggering 48.5% of all Americans live in a household that receives some form of government benefits. Back in 1983, that number was below 30 percent.

#14 Young people in particular have been hit really hard by this economy. If you can believe it, 37 percent of all U.S. households that are led by someone under the age of 35 have a net worth of zero or less than zero.

#15 The “wealth gap” between older Americans and younger Americans continues to grow. According to an analysis of Census Bureau data done by the Pew Research Center, the median net worth for households led by someone 65 years of age or older is 47 times greater than the median net worth for households led by someone under the age of 35.

If you are doing good in the economy, you should be very thankful because there are tens of millions of Americans out there that are deeply, deeply suffering.

Most Americans understand that something is wrong with this country. According to a recent Fox News poll, 76 percent of all Americans are “dissatisfied with how things are going in the country”. At the beginning of this year, that number was only at 61 percent.

So obviously frustration is rising and a lot of Americans are extremely pessimistic right now. But most of them also believe that things will get better soon if only they vote the “correct” politician into office.

I saw this the other day and all I could do is laugh this statement is coming from a woman that made the same type of statement for the health care bill, " we have to pass the bill to see what's in it". I think this woman is not just stupid but quite possibly retarded. She is one of the many fools that Obama has around him. Makes you wonder why any of us think that were in any other mess then the one we are in. If you have a group of fools lead by a bigger fool with a retard as the speaker how do we expect there to be a better outcome then they one we have? Even the Washington Post which is a very left sided news paper said Pelosi pulled the numbers for the unemployment out of nothing. Basically she lied. As for me I think that maybe 1/1000th percent of the statement is correct he did create a job, the job that he created or helped to create more hours for was the printer at the treasury because we can all tell that he hasn't produced any real jobs in this country because the unemployment rate is just under 10% even by the fake numbers they have been giving us. Most people can see the people without jobs and know that in most states the unemployment rate is well over 10%. Just look at the city of Detroit it's unemployment rate is over 20%. Not one of the members of this fake government has or ever will tell you and me the truth, we all need to be ready for the coming collapse.
